Need a Spot
Hey guys, nice forum here. I'm new here and as you may have guessed by now, I'm from up here in Canada and have an 89 Raider. I don't want you all to hate me, but I picked it up for $500 and the engine (3.0L) had just been rebuilt 1000 miles previous. It runs great, but the suspension and steering components were in rough shape. I have replaced the idle arm, front shocks and all inner and outer tie rod ends, but I keep hearing this kind of almost clunking almost scratching/rubbing noise when I am turning and going over a bump of some sort. If I am just turning on flat pavement it's fine. If I'm hitting a bump straight on it's just fine. It's the combination that gives me the noise. I thought that it may be the control arm shaft, but there doesn't seem to be any play that I can see when I have it lifted. Should I replace them anyways, or do you guys have any idea on what else it may be? Could it be the pitman arm by any chance? It happens when turning left or right. Thanks in advance.

The $1 fix. Crank the wheel to one side and turn it off/lock the wheel. Look carefully at the entire steering linkage to see where the steering stop is; grease that spot. Do the same for the other side. It'll last for a bit.

Stock, there were rubber bits at the contact points, but they wear away. Amazingly loud and annoying, isn't it?

Welcome! What part of AB are you in?

Here is a little more info on JB's post: http://www.4x4wire.com/mitsubishi/tech/minutemods/steering/

It is truly an easy fix! I actually found the right diameter hose, and fashioned new rubbers to hold the grease on there better, back in the day. I've had a few Mitsu's since my 89 Raider, but it will always be one of my faves!

Hey Phil nice to see someone close by up here. I live in Taber (by Lethbridge) so really not too far from you. Are there other guys around this area too?

It's funny you know, I looked at those steering stops last night and thought that they might be the culprit but just wasn't sure. That has got to be what the problem is. Thanks for the help guys.

Body Damage is Cool
one thing I did also is get a package of the caps that go on the bottom of folding chairs cut the excess and put them on. cost about $1.50 for 4 so you will have spares.

I always wanted to figure out a way to fix a teflon ball/disk on that stop head. Permanent repair without grease...

Thanks guys for the suggestions. The grease thing worked like a charm for now and I think I'm might try something a little more permanent once the noise starts to creep back. The caps for the folding chairs seems like another good semi- permanent fix so I might try that. It's amazing how such a small thing can sound like your wheel is going to fall off when cornering!

There are a few, although the numbers are down the last couple of years... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />

If you're needing parts, have you seen this ad, from Carseland (south of Strathmore)?

It seems there is also an issue with the torsion bars popping, as described in a TSB. I of course suffer from this symptom.

Does anyone know where I could get the urethane collars Mitsu suggests to sleeve the torsion bars?
