 Wheel bearings - 2002 4runner

Getting the Wheeling Fever

I'm getting some pulsing on front brakes even after replacing rotors and pads (myself). With 160k miles I'm thinking that front wheel bearings may be an issue (I've never touched them). Is this a "driveway job" or is a press needed?

Sorry, but a press is needed. This is very much NOT the suspension of the earlier Toyotas. You'll need a press and an extra set of hands, given the geometry of the spindle arm. Sure it's not your ABS? If insisting on the bearings, use OEM stuff. I used Moog components the first round of a rebuild (BJs) and was under there 45K later. Thanks - one thought I had was to get a set of spindles from a junkyard and have the races replaced - then just swap spindles. But I guess the springs have to be compressed as well?

Nope, pull that arm off and take it to the shop. And YES, you'll be needing at the VERY least, the upper BJs to put back in. Throw 'em in the freezer; works well. Good to have the lowers handy too; you can take 'em back if you don't want to go ahead and do some full-on maintenance.
Jeff and I have sworn at these a couple times.
Again, the FSM's over on ncttora's site will be a huge help to you.

Don't worry about the springs at all. Whether stock or aftermarket, there's just 3 bolts at the top and one large bolt at the bottom to remove the entire coil-over assembly. Just have that corner of the truck sitting on jack stands with that wheel at full droop. That part is easy.

I don't know about wheel bearings causing brake pulsations. The usual symptoms of a bad wheel bearing is a grinding, rumbling, or droning noise that changes pitch with your speed.
Is it only when you apply the brakes? Can you feel it in the steering wheel or the seat?
You should be able to detect some play or noise in the wheels if the bearings are shot.
