Just jumped into my car to head home, and it wouldn't start. Got a tow home. The battery has a good charge. Checked the error codes via the engine light and returned only 1 code: 86 Couldn't find what this was. No idea where to start. One minute it was ok, now its not. AAARRRGGGHHH!!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
Its a 99 auto
forgot to mention that by dead/wont start, I mean it wont even crank over. All the lights on the dash come on.

Code 86? Not P0086 or something like that? 87 for OBDI is: 87 Malfunction Indicator Lamp short Circuit. -OR- P1486 EGR Solenoid Valve Vent Open or Short. -Or- P1586 A/T-M/T Codification There is NO such code as "86"... Keep in mind you car is an OBDII controlled car. Here's a list of codes: trouble codes

It is not a P code as I don't have a reader. I checked the codes via the CEL. After rechecking a dozen times it is definately 86. I'm about to check the timing belt.

Well, I undid a few bolts on the top timing belt cover and had a peek inside. Everything looks good. There is tension on the belt. I tested the power to the starter solenoid and there is voltage. So, shouldn't the starter motor kick over?

Well, it looks like DTC 86 is "Starter Solenoid/Starter Motor". I remembered an old trick I used on an XC Falcon I had. HIT THE DAMN THING WITH A HAMMER!!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> Problem solvered. But I will still need to take it off, clean/inspect/repair.

been hitting the starter on my miata for a year... 1 out of every 5 starts it won't crank.. out comes the 3 foot 1/2 inch extension.. smack twice, start car..
although, i'm surprised we have a CEL for that??
So, i bought an 01 Kia Sportage. before i even drove it, i nick-named it The Goat.. it has been just like a goat.. stubbern at every corner...

Well, it's not official, there is no record of it anywhere. I know that by using a reader you get more codes. I have seen the same DTC posted in various forums but no resolution. It would be nice to have it confirmed.
