Need a Spot
First I want to thank everyone who has or had a part in building these forums up. I understand how much time goes into documenting repairs, upgrades and just posting General Questions. This has helped tremendously; and is now my turn to give back. I recently purchased a 97 Montero LS (3.5 SOHC 6G74) and not knowing when anything was changed out, I want/need to do a major overhaul/tune up. I am going to be replacing the timing belt because of the motor type and check out an oil leak on my Left Head, So I figured I might as well replace the following.
TIMING BELT ITEMS

ò Timing Belt kit
o Water pump
o Actuator
o Camshaft Belt Idler
o Camshaft belt Tensioner
o Water pump seal and gasket
ò Cam Shaft Seal
ò Spark Plugs (x6 NGK laser platinum)
ò NGK Wire Set

HEAD ITEMS

ò Air intake fitting gasket
ò Intake plenum gasket
ò Throttle body gasket
ò Valve cover gasket (x2)
ò Plug guide seals (x6)
ò Coolant outlet pipe o-ring (x2)
ò EGR pipe gasket
ò Exhaust valve guide seals (x12)
ò Inlet valve guide seals (x12)
ò Head Gasket (x2)
I have made this list from all the forums IÆve seen and have sent emails out to people asking for their advice, (Thank you Off Roader, Fast Cat, Mad Scientist and Fast Eddy) I will be ordering all the above items within a week, just want to make sure I havenÆt missed anything, (IÆve been going over this for a while now) And need new EXPERIANCED eyes to take a look. I will be making a full tutorial out of this for members to come, because a lot of the older posts no longer have pictures. Thank you for any help you can give.

Thing you need to know.

The rocker cover gaskets have now turn to a hard plastic and a pain in the butt to to get out. That's why you have a leak there. Also the spark plug guide seal will be the same way, but come out easier.

I also find it helpful to reinstall the bolts after removing a part where possible, like brackets for instance. I also keep them separated for major items, it's easy to get them mix up ( same size different lengths ).

Don't for get your coolant and a 22mm socket for the crank bolt.

remember, the truck must be parked pointed due east when you start the work (to curry the favor of it's ancestors), and you must sprinkle a touch of your ancestors ashes at each corner of the truck (to introduce them to the truck's ancestors), then circle the truck three times chanting "Mighty Murphy, spare this sinner, Mighty Murphy, spare this sinner!" in a reverent voice. Self flagellation is not generally required in most cases, unless the crank bolt won't come off. May the gods not need a laugh.

It would be absolutely amazing if someone could do a video or step by step with pics for the DOHC 3.5. Still this is gonna be a great resource to have

Thanks...actually ive been looking to buy another monty, one with the SOHC, so i cant wait to see this...meanwhile ive been watching youtube videos on people replacing timing belts, hard to believe their are none for the Montero. Anyways a video would be great, just try to have adequate lighting.

Any idea when u might do this big project?
