So Im thinking about getting a Gen 2.5 for my 2nd vehicle and have a few questions.
1)I know this has the SOHC motor, if the timinig belt breaks are you still looking at lots of engine damage like the DOHC? 2)Is the SOHC alot easier to work on then the DOHC? 3)anything else I need to know or ask when searching craigslist (i know about the R/D locker on winter models)
EDIT: also what mileage is too high to buy, I would prefer a lower mileage one...but alot of them in my price range r at about 175-200K...Is that too risky of mileage?

Change the timing belt, that takes care of 1 and 2 for the most part. I would not go by miles, a 100k city truck could be worse than a 200k freeway truck. Try to find yourself a nice family mall cruiser. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />
Do the standard checks when buying any used truck, I wouldn't trust anything the owner says. Run the carfax, check the oil and tranny fluid. Check the tailpipe for oil residue. Check the radiator fluid. Make sure the 4x4 works on a dirt road. Ask them who does the service on the truck.

Thanks for the info...I just looked at one with 187K for $2900 with locker. Engine was very solid with the power, it seemed to be leaking some oil near the valve cover gasket (could smell a little burning too) Question though: the tranny fluid was a very light clear brown, what does that indicate? Also I really need to know if the 3.5 SOHC will have major engine damage with a broken timing belt like the DOHC http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/ctd/2580799866.html

If the timing belt breaks on the 3.5 SOHC, it's toast.

The SOHC looks great, go for it, and just spend $500 and take out the timing belt and put a new one in. (If you don't know when the last one was put in) I'm in the process of ordering everything to do it myself. Or just do the same ritual you told me to, but change your wording to "Rubber Gods, Protect my package" (of coarse referring to the engine)
