Sorry for the slow reply! Ubuntu doesn't seem to like this bbs (won't let me log in). Had to wait to get to my windows laptop.

Be orignal and put in a cummins 4bt. I am a personal fan of VW diesel and have worked on them, but I am not sure how well they would do on the lwb. I would slap a 1.9 TDI in a swb in a heartbeat. You might can look at the dodge crd they put in the libertys, if money is not an option. Besides that whatever you do it will be custom and only you can decide how custom you want to go.

I like the VW TDIs too. I also drive a 2004 VW TDI wagon. I agree with you though, it seems a stretch to put that 1.9 in a big Monty.

4BT would be a awesome! Don't know if I or my wallet could handle a project like that, though .

I was disappointed to hear the kind of fuel economy those Liberty's got with the CRD. Probably out of my budget as well.

I should have stated more what I want to achieve:

I have my daily driver (the TDI Wagon). I want to make the Monty into a multifunctional utility vehicle. I'd use it for trips to Lowe's, camping, mild off-road fun, family road trips, etc). I want it to run on diesel for fuel economy, reliability, versatility in fuel type (doomsday scenario ). Not interested in gobs of power.

I want to improve on the 3.0 V6's fuel economy by a little at least. I don't want to be underpowered, though. I think the V6 had enough for my purposes. 6BT in an FJ60 (granted, heavier than the Monty) seems to do low to mid teens in mpg. CRD in the Liberty same or worse from what I've read.

If a detroit 6.2L diesel V8 can get mid 20's pulling around a giant K5 Blazer, then surely I can get around that same economy in a 4 or 5 cyl diesel with the Monty, right?
