A lot of folks consider diesel swaps for fuel savings, so here are some real numbers, with 2 1/2 years driving the 4D56T and then 3 with the 4M40T.:
-The 4D56 (intercooled) turning 488s in a shorty genII yielded me just under 10L/100km on 33x1050 ATs.
-The 4M40 (intercooled) turning 490s in a LWB genII is currently getting me about 12.5L/100km on 33s.
I've done better and worse on each, but those are my averages. I track my fuel usage very closely, and do a lot of driving, mostly secondary roads, and some gravel...
The extra fuel used in the LWB is partly due to the extra weight of the limo, and the extra gear I carry on board, but it is a thirstier engine. On the other hand, my opinion is its a much more refined power plant - its quieter, smoother, has a timing chain instead of a belt, has a block mounted vac pump instead of sharing with the alternator, starts better in extreme cold, and has much better usable power, esp if you're coupling it with an auto.
Here in Canada there are several years of Pajeros available. We are allowed to import JDM rigs from Japan as long as they're 15 years old (to the month of build) before they're brought over. GenII pajeros were available in 91 in Japan, starting with the 4D56, which means we could import them starting in 2006. The 4M40 became available in 93, which put them in Canada beginning in 2008. Now and then you can find a wrecked one on the various forsale sites, esp in BC where the port of Vancouver is. This, IMHO is the way to go if you're going to do a swap. Buy the entire rig from somewhere up here, bring it home, and then you've got everything you need.
