I have a 2.6 in my Raider and its an OK motor and everything but why do you want to swap one IN? I'm wanting to swap mine OUT for a 2.4l fuel injected motor from a newer montero.

If you're looking for a 2.4l, it'll come from a early 90's Migthy Max, etc., not a Montero.

you missed the part where I put a T after the 2.6... 2.6Turbo is a very different animal from the carbed 2.6 engine. More power than the 3.0 and the sweet ass turbo noise. Brendan on Youtube If I can make the swap work nicely, I would install a bigger turbo, exhaust, injectors, etc etc. I am not planning on making ANY cuts to my frame, any mods will be done to easily replaceable motor mounts.

I "think", or whatever I do that passes for thinking, that the motor mount horns on the frame are different. You might mix and match v6 and i4 parts to make it work.
I would build a 4g64t before I spent the time on a 4g54t. MPFI, turbo stuff from 4g63t fits, dohc24v, and tons of support and already figgered out stuff. Still have to futz with the motor mounts, but 300hp is pretty easy...

If the Raiders V6 holds out long enough I would consider it sometime later this spring. I just need to find the oil leak, I am suspecting either valve cover end caps because I NEVER changed those all the times Ive done valve covers, valve seals and I am sure they are begging for it.
Edit, I got engine names confused, I thought you meant use a VR4 head setup and turbo the V6. Which would be the idea I would like the most. No modding engine mounts, just the engine itself
Would the Raiders 3.0 stand up to the abuse of a turbo? I am pretty confident in my engine rebuilding skills, so if the cost is similar, I would have no problem doing a little investing into a single turbo setup on that engine after a refresh of rings, and maybe a Diamante crank.

I have a 1997 montero ls putting a 2.6 in to it. a 2.6 bellhousing will not bolt on. I still plan on getting it in there still. I think it is not fitting as mine was a 3.5 to start with.
1997 Montero LS with a motor swap a 1990 V6 12valve ported heads full 2.5in Ex I run stock tire size for Daily use, off road have 33x12.5 working on going trubo.

4g63 = 2.0 sohc8v/dohc16v/dohc16vturbo I4 4g64 = 2.4 sohc8v/dohc16v I4 (can accept 4g63t parts to make a 2.4t) the above two are from the sirius mitsu engine family iirc 4g54 = 2.6 sohc carb and turbo I4
I would build the 2.4 over the other two, and perhaps over a 3.0 12v, even if I was turboing the 3.0. The 2.4 would be a lot easier to turbo, as no exh manifolds have to be fabbed up, most all the parts are stock mitsu except the ecu (and you can even use that if you fool the maf by 20%).
All that's left is water plumbing, fuel plumbing, downpipe back exhaust, and a control cables (throttle and if a/t, tv cable) and wiring it up. You have to do all that for a 3.0t PLUS fab up some heavy iron exh mani's (or at least one if you don't TT) or be prepared to weld up cracks on tubular manis every month from now on. The 2.4 makes impressive power, and there's a huge aftermarket that supports the 2.0 and 2.4 engines, especially in turbo form - large forum communities, too.

The 2.6T will go into a '90 Montero quite easily, change the bell and bolt it in. The 2.6T will have considerably more low end torque than the 3.0 !2V. I doubt it will get as much gas yardage though.
The '97 engine mounts are spaced wider than the early ones so for that install you will need to weld up some engine brackets. And yes the bellhousing will not swap out. You will need the early transmission as well. I take it you do not need OBD II on that 97?
