While conducting further research I stumbled upon this synthetic NAPA Platinum. Good reviews at bobistheoilguy.
Anyone use this or has an opinion. I do agree if you use a good filter and it probably doesn't justify spending 3x over OEM.

Here is a link to NAPA.

Happy Trails

If you change your oil every 5000 miles, it probably doesn't make a big difference what kind of oil filter you use.

Unless you use a not-so-good filter...like Fram. The anti-drain-back valves are c-r-a-p and allow the oil to all drain back into the oil pan almost immediately. I used to have big-time problems with my 2.6's being oil starved on start-up and taking a bit to reprime the pump and build pressure (not all of it due to the filter, but a better filter did make a difference).

I purchased the Napa Platinum: 41334 for the Gen 2 3.5 liter.

It is approx 20% larger and $12.00. Double the weight of the OEM filter. Very well made and its synthetic.

Napa suggested changing the filter every 7,000 miles.

Did they enquire about your driving habits prior to suggesting a change interval? There's an association of napa dealers in CO who work with the local experts and provide classes on motor oil. They go over how to determine the change interval based on driving habits. Hopefully the dealer based his suggestion on this rather than just a standard timeframe.

They did not ask about driving habits. But you do make a point. My Montero is not my primary vehicle. It stays in the garage until I play. Garage kept for eighteen years. I'm a strong believer in preventative maintenance.

Happy Trails!

I only use the OEM filters fromMitsu. Cheap, and engine is MUCH less chattery on them. Plain old Dino juice.

Best indicator of OCI is used oil analysis. Did NAPA dealers mention that?

The Napa store's part of the association in Co know that and they do recommend it. They have a 2-3 hour long weekly podcast (Drive Radio) if anyone's interested that covers much of this pretty regularly along with other engine ailments.

I've used the WIX (napa) filters since I've owned this and NAPA oil. Using synthetic 15w50 and change mine every 5,000 or two years, whatever comes first. I used the nascar select but they are discountied now so back to the Gold. I want to get an old Ford 302/351w oil adapter to put on so the filter faces down, not to the side. Cleaning my skid plate every time I do an oil change sucks.
