Property has some old heavy brome; once it's tackled, should behave.

I've got a John Deere tri blade PTO Mower that we pull behind a Ford 8n... Why.

I've had good service from one of those super weed eaters on wheels, think it's a DR. At least, it would chop out everything but the 1"+ stuff. We used garage door cable in ours, and it just ate stuff up.

I've also used a pruning saw attachment on one of the interchangeable end weedeaters, with the shoulder strap it makes a pretty good bushwhacker. Useless in dead blackberry vines, though

The hog can take up to 3" stuff without even slowing down, we run right over 15' high blackberry vines and 20' tall Alder trees and turn them into tiny chips.

The D&R can handle small stuff, but run it into a big clump of Bulrush and it stalls out. What is does do is smooth things out nicely.


We cleared about 50 acres this year with the combo, it only took 3 days.

Anything smaller than the D&R is pretty much a waste of time in MHO, you might as well use an axe and a pair of loppers.....*EB

Bush Hogging the tough stuff..ummm driving over and cutting down small trees say up to 1 1/2" to 2" in diameter.. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" /> can be pretty hard on tractor drive train, but can do it if you take it easy.

If you got really big stuff to clear, you might get somebody with a bush hog to clear it. Then an ATV tow behind heavy duty mower can keep it under control...

Boy, I wish for an 8N or a 9N. I'd be one happy little camper.

This is old homestead property that was in hay/horses. The brome is pretty old with a mat that needs working down. Terrain for the most part is even. The swale towards the property line is hummocked, but I wouldn't want to drive a tractor in that mess anyway.

We used to have a guy with the equipment, but he passed and his son sold most of it. Stuff could use a good burnoff, but by the time I made a fire line wide enough to make BLM happy, I may as well plow the works, and still deal with the brome.

Just waiting for a day to drive 70 miles to see the Soil and Water Conservation district to bug them for some ideas. Granted it's winter now, but this is when we line things up.

yep that's the way I've run mine over the years... We got the same stuff... tractor wise and a 5' wide, heavier than h... bushhog.. Easy to do wheelies in the higher gears and a jerk of the throttle with the raised bush hog hung off the back.

You've probably done the same thing I have at times driving over trees big enough that it's uncertain whether the tractor going to make it over them or will it get hung up on top of a bunch of bent over trees.. and you certainly can't back up one you are on top of them...

Ford changed the names more often than the design.. The 841 and the 4000 are of the same design. Mine's the next to the last year ('64)of production of that vintage 4 cylinder design.. a '63... before they went to the 3 cylinder based Canadian Ford design.

Tractor must have is a capstan type wheel winch, for those "woops, shouldna driven into that" moments, you know, the kind where you are the tractor god and can drive over anything, like King Kong on steroids and meth. This is only actually possible in a Cat D11 with the fuel button drilled out to where you don't let the warranty guy see it. There is something inately satisfying about driving over stuff. I have to operate one of those timber harvesters some time, the ones that walk into the woods, grab the tree, cut if off the stump, carry it out of the thicket like a parasol, lay it flat over the cab where the gang limbing saws clean off the slash, and lay it on the log pile for the grappler to lay on the log trailer. I've seen models that will do this on a 48" trunk 150' tall. They are working on ones that walk on 4-8 legs instead of wheels. "Walk" may be the wrong term. They are talking about speeds of 40mph with a fast computer to run the legs. At a weight without log of over 60 tons. Think about the military applications. We could have cavalry again without making the horses wear ballistic kevlar and ceramic plate armor.
