 Air bag light questions

I have a 1996 T100 SR5 4x4 with 164xxx miles. I've gotten great help before on here so hope that someone can help me with this question.
Recently the air bag light has been coming on. The interesting thing to me is, the light will come on and stay on for several starts. It then stays off for several starts. Seems to stay on for about 5 starts and then stays off for about 5 starts. I haven't added them up for certain but 5 is about right.
I was suspecting that it is a signal to have the air bags checked at the dealer. If that's what it is, I'm not doing that and will just disconnect the light. However, I don't know if that's it.
Any ideas what's causing this?
