Pulled the drive shaft and removed the oil slinger , c-clip and seal today , although the new seal won't be here untill tomorrow. Sure enough there are 3 rips in the rubber , very visible once the slinger was removed.I had to order the new seal from the dealer , NAPA didn't have the part. Also , I took the old seal and the bill from when I bought all the seals , and the number on the bill did not match up to the seal that they cross referenced in NAPA.It seems the seal they gave me fit , but the shaft rubber was a tiny bit smaller , hence the rips.At least the seal from the dealer will be the correct one , although it is almost twice the cost:brickwall: The plus side of this was I did not have to remove the transfer case to fix it , and it is only about an hour job if that to fix it , the seals come out easy.I will do the electrical tape thing again to get the seal over the c-clip area so it doesn't rip there , now would I be better to just use ATF for lube , or should I throw a little grease or assembly lube on the shaft so it slides on nice and won't rip when the shaft turns? Also , how important are those oil slingers? It looks like it does seal a little to the rubber seal that sticks out off the top of the seal , but it doesn't look like it is a very important seal , more like a secondary just in case , obviously it doesn't do much if the seal itself goes , noted by the fact that my jeep is coated in ATF from the rear of the transfer case to my rear diff.
