Hi.....I was running my truck thru town, got on the freeway and it ran fine. Got off the freeway and it died. It started but died again. I can start it and as long as I keep the accelerator pedal down it runs.....it just will not idle. Took the carb off and had it rebuilt. Put it back on and I have the same problem.....it will not idle. Any ideas???? I have been looking at my chiltons book and suspecting the fuel cut solenoid. I had the carb place check it and they said it works. Are these normally closed? I also looked at the circuit diagram and it says these get power from an emissions computer. Does anyone know where this is located? I did find an emmissions relay in the engine compartment. I heard it switching with just the key on? Anyone who has ideas or experience with these your info/help would be greatly appreciated. Johnny

Hi!
It's also possible your fuel pump died.
I had similar symptoms several years ago; highway speed was fine, but as soon as I'd coast into the turn bay, it would die; had to keep the pedal to it. The diaphragms go bad in them. Not that bad a swap, just remember to put your spacer and gasket back on there.

I suspected the fuel pump but, I took the truck up over a hill and it did not hesistate. Therefore, it is only at low to no loads. When I open the throttle it does not hesitate to run the rpms up. Is the pump still suspect......they are cheap to replace so I may do it. Please reply on your thoughts..... Thanks Johnny

Maybe but there still other things to consider. I tested the fuel pump already. It is pumping ok and the fuel bowl is at half glass. So it has fuel.....I appreciate your ideas

Your pump is flooding your carb. If the bowl was empty, you'd be looking at your needle/float valve.

Hi...I checked the fuel bowl and found it was half full. Does this indicate that it is overfull and flooding the carb? From the specs I found halfway in the sightglass is normal. Johnny

Ditto with kewlynx..... U had carb rebuilt so in theory it should be working... Hence bowls and needles.....
My pump went out a year or so ago... its an EASY swap.. Right upfront, open hood and its smiling at you... 2 or 3 bolts (from memory) pull it out - slip in the new, rides on cam(??) EASY... Welcome aboard....

Yup, fuel pump is easy. I had to move the upper rad hose out of the way to do mine though. Don't forget the spacer between the head and pump! The pump arm does ride on an eccentric ring that's attached to the front of the cam - that's how it pumps. Depending on where you get your pump, be aware of which fuel hose goes where. I think I had one that were different than factory.

Hey thanks for your reply, I was wondering if you really think that is the problem. The fuel bowl shows half glass of fuel. From what I read this is spec. My thinking is......if the fuel pump was bad I would not be able to rev up the engine under load to get myself home. Do you agree with this?
