I have a cure and preventative that beats the whey out of antibiotics. Get a quart milk jug. Put in 4tsp of boric acid, 4Tsp of salt (Kosher if you swing that way), 4tsp of baking soda, and 4tsp of sugar. Add warm water and agitate to put all the stuff into solution. This stuff will keep for months, btw.
Get an ear syringe/nasal syringe like you use on infants, the little rubber sperm squeeze bulb thingy.
It is best to treat oneself in the shower, or naked and outside with a hose handy if it won't get the neighbors talking again.
Fill the syringe with the astringent/antibacterial/saline/sucrose wash, and while bending forward, blast the contents into one nostril while holding the other closed. Dance from foot to foot for a while, then blast out the stuff and whatever it scared loose. Repeat with the other nostril. Repeat cycle until bleeding stops or starts, or when you get an opened up nasal airway. This recipe is from an old school ENT MD who actually did people some good even in Birmingham air in the 70's with the steel mills and coke plants (de-acetylened coal, not the alkaloid) smokin' away downwind from Bessemer to Ensley to Pratt City. If I use it, I have greatly diminished nasal allergies and infections, get no more than one cold a year, never have an infected sinus or ear infection or sore throat or bronchitis (an annual event for me in the past - went to college on a chronic bronchitis scholarship). Good stuff. You can still find boric acid at most pharmacies. The rest of the stuff is off the grocery shelf. Be careful with the boric acid and do not ingest any significant quantity or leave where pets or children can access. Can cause internal bleeding and death, and is a dandy ant killer, rat, and mouse killer in bait.
