I think she mentioned that it will crank and run for a bit. Making much noise in the process though.

Alot of this work is going to depend on how much you are comfortable doing. If some of our 4x4wire peeps were closer to lend a hand that would help out more than online diagnosis. It would be helpful to get a breaker bar with a socket for the crank and turn the crank to feel and hear for any interference. That and the advice given you should give you a direction.

Thanks... I missed that.

My suggestion would be to look at the engine oil filter. If it did lose a bearing, there will be a lot of metal in the filter.

I have used a chisel and a pair of metal shears, they do make tools open them up, but the are kind of pricey.

Anyone think the front pully might be loose?

Kevin

Need a Spot
I have to agree that it is almost certainly a spun bearing. Some of these engines in the 6g7X family have what seems to be a higher than average incidence of spun bearings. The sound and symptoms are exactly what a number of people who have spun bearings on their 3000GTs and Stealth have described. Don'r run the car any further-the motor will seize up.

I would recomend you join up on
3si.org
3sgto.org
6g72rwd.forumcircle.com
and let people know your story if you want to try to save your Monte. It is possible, although far from certain, that someone may be near you and able to help you in your situation.

Best of luck!

I agree with Kevin. Check your crank pulley to see if it is loose. I also agree with not cranking it back up until you get this thing sorted out.

Three possible scenarios to be summed up are

1. Jumped timing= pistons hitting valves causing your noise(this will more than likely be accompanied by engine running somewhat to very poorly)

2. Main bearing or thrown rod= Metal hitting metal internally in the bottom end means bad news big time. This is the worst case scenario IMO. (May or may not run normally)

3. Crank pulley loose= This is the best case scenario of the three. Basically you have a large pulley in the front of the engine that all of your belts are centered on. These have actually been recalled by Mitsubishi to have an upgraded bolt installed or treated and tightened. (may or may not run normally at least until it comes off. Then it will not run at all)

I had to replace the crank pulley on mine because the ribs where the alternator belt is guided decided to detach from the actual pulley itself.

I hope you get this sorted out soon. I know I'd hate to lose the use of my rig for very long.

Intake butterflies?

When it cranked up after knocking, what was the oil pressure?

To find another motor, search car-part.com, using your zip code for a sort by distance from you. I just put in midwest and found at least 4 runners and more than that cores.

Sorry to hear your troubles.
Most likely serious engine trouble. Don't wast your money. Totally not worth it. Junk it. Buy new Montero if that's what you want. It will be cheaper then putting new or or even used engine into it. And just about as much gamble as the later.
