They're not that much smaller and since you'd have a Low Low in the area of 5:1 the shock loads wouldn't be as bad as if you were running stock gears or 3.15's in the big case. Plus it's not like the older Gen 2 cases were weak they're just a step down, i've seen a 4cyl T-case hold up to rock crawling and 3.5 DOHC with lockers and 35's. there are other options for retaining AWD but they all involve similar sized T-cases.
