Hey guys
What should I be expecting at highway speed on my montero? At 65 I think I was at 3000 to 3500 rpms, sounded like the engine was more comfortable at 45 to 50 mph at 2000 or so.
I also lost acceleration at 65 and the rpms dropped. I just changed out the secondary throttle UFO looking thing and I know that's working. What else could that be?

Anybody? I was thinking maybe this thing tops out at 65 or so like the old Land Rovers.

It's been well over a decade since I had a 2.6l, but it certainly was not a speed demon. If you have the 5spd, I don't believe 5th gear is an overdrive gear, so you're going to rev a little higher. That being said, 3k - 3.5k hardly seems unreasonable for a 4cyl pushing an upside down dumpster, and seems to be about what I recall mine running at.
I never pushed mine hard, but it seems I had it up 80 a few times without too many parts falling off. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />
Third times a charm.

In 4th gear (stick trans) at 60 mph, the engine should be revving around 3200 rpm. This is not a problem for the 2.6L.
Fifth gear is an overdrive. I'd run down the road on a normal day with 31" tires at 3500 rpm in fifth with no difficulty.

I have an '89 SWB, 2.6L, Weber 32/36, 5-speed, with 31s, and it has no problem cruising at 65, and can do 80 all day long. I'll have to look and see what rpms I'm pulling at 60 in 5th, but I think it's around 3000, maybe a little less.

My trans is auto
Thanks guys! I just bought this thing and I'm starting to fix it up so your guys help is really appreciated. Since this seems to be the only forum to go too for this model and year.
Just found out my vacuum advance wasn't hooked up maybe that has something to do with the highway speed problems, I'll have to test it tommorow.

I was just looking over be vacuums and some to seem connected wrong. I found dans vacuum schematic and I'm confused. Are there several vacuum hose connectors on the mikuni carb that are not used? If I follow his schematic Might have 2 or 3 not used.

The stock Mikuni carb is a POS, and has a rat's nest of hoses associated with it. All the more reason to junk it and replace it with a Weber 32/36. IIRC, the only line you have to hook up is the vacuum advance one coming off the distributor, and of course a fuel line. All the other ones you can just leave unplugged, but you'll have to plug the end of the water hose that goes into the base of the stock Mikuni carb.
Do a search on here, and there's quite a few posts about replacing the stock Mikuni with a Weber. This could also be part of your lack of acceleration problem. When I first got my Monty, it could barely get out of its own way. Found out that the secondaries were shot, so I was basically running on a 1-barrel. The Weber GREATLY improved the daily driveability, once I got the fuel/air and idle settings more or less dialed in.

Not when they're set up properly w/out leaking vacuum lines which IIRC is the number one problem other than some bozo not hooking the lines up correctly.
