I cannot tell you how many times I replaced a fuel filter per customer request and ended up having to change the fuel pump shortly afterwards. If the filter prohibits flow even a little, it will wear out the fuel pump causing the initial problem you had. Upon replacing the filter, you opened up the restriction and allowed the problem you have at present. I am watching the probowl right now or I would explain the science behind it. I have seen this issue so many times I lost count. Good luck.
