I received an email this morning informing me that the part shipped on Monday. Just checked the tracking number - the package has already cleared customs in San Francisco. So I hope it will arrive by Friday. If so, I'll post some photos...

Surprise, surprise... I had just arrived home from work to find the postman delivering a package from Seoul, South Korea. It's here - and it fits the 28-spline axles (I had to check)... Is this the first Track Finder to make it to the US??? ![[Linked Image]](http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af117/peabody1986/Sportage/DSC01399.jpg) ![[Linked Image]](http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af117/peabody1986/Sportage/DSC01401.jpg) I'll be pulling axles as soon as I get the dual batteries installed! $894 USD total. MasterJeep upped the price on the Track Finder when my middle-man tried to purchase the part. Then they refused to sell him the part alone, which incurred the cost of installing it in an open carrier. So the price of the part went up to $689 USD (710,000 Won). The middle-man shipped it fast, which added $135 USD. And I paid him $70 USD for the service (he did a good bit of legwork for me and was the ONLY response I received from all of my attempts to purchase the locker). That brought the total to $894 USD. I haven't received any billing from US customs regarding import fees and didn't have to pay to get the package released. So $894 might be the final total. I'll let you know if a couple of G-Men come knocking on my door for the import fees... As I've said a few times, $894 is a hefty price. But that is still less than all of the other options, which may or may not work, if pursued. And the price isn't as bad as it seems because it includes an open carrier with new bearings (the cross pin looks new too, and they may have replaced the thrust washers), with all parts installed and ready to load into the pumpkin (still have to transfer the ring gear and "ping ring"). How much would you pay to have that done, including parts? Good, bad or ugly, I finally have the freekin' locker now and my quest to procure one is finally over!!!

I was double-checking the specs on the 26 and 28 spline rear axles. I was sure they were identical - this based on a side-by-side comparison of the axle shafts and cross-referencing the axle bearings. Turns out I was wrong - I was cross-referencing the front axle bearings. The bearings for the 26 spline axle are slightly smaller in diameter than the 28 spline shaft (#A9 bearing with 2.5591 in OD on the 26 spline, vs #A10 bearing with 2.875 in OD on the 28 spline). So it looks like I will need to pick up a complete rear axle from a '98 or newer Sporty. As embarrassing as it is, the price of a complete axle (with brake drums) is just over $100 at the local pull-your-own-parts yard. That's not too bad. And I can rebuild the axle prior to installing it (less downtime).
That said, if you want to put a Track Finder locker in a '94-'97 Sporty, you will need to swap the entire axle.

Peabody, Thanks for sharing so much on this topic.
I had some axles out of a 2000 I was going to put into my 96 after getting a lsd rear diff and I would have torn everything apart, put it back together and then been screwed!!! Guess I'll need to get another rearend too.
Might be good to fab a truss and pinion protector and weld it on.
Thanks for your post.

I'm always willing to grab a sledge hammer and volunteer to clear the mine field for the convenience of my comrades.
I was mulling over the situation last night and was wondering if having the 28 spline axle shafts turned down to fit the A9 bearings was an option. I think it could be done that way, assuming there's no issues with the seals (they also differ between axle sets). The advantage to that is that I could use the parts already purchased for the job (A9 bearings, seals, new brake drums, shoes and hardware - rear brakes are slightly larger on the '98+ Sporties... And the axle retaining plates have to be swapped too, which would be done at the time of replacing bearings). But that would also make the axles somewhat weaker (does it matter? - how many people have snapped 26 spline axles due to the shaft diameter at the bearing???). However, the cost of machining would likely match, or perhaps exceed the cost of buying a used axle, though I'd still want to replace the bearings and brakes... I still have time to do the research - have to finish the dual batts (been delayed by rain... lots of rain). Yeah, I'll talk to a machinist and report back on the cost and drawbacks of that approach.
On that note, how difficult is it to pull the complete axle? Can it be done as a one-man job???
