So on my 4cyl could I grab everything from a 2nd gen truck and swap it in? Don't mean to hijack the thread, sorry.

Or you can grab the brakes off of a GEN 1 V6. For an 87 SWB its a great upgrade. Don't forget to grab the brake booster, its a drop in and the V6 uses a double diaphragm that offer more assist and IMHO better pedal feel.

The factory single diaphragm booster on the 87 runs out of assist, especially if you have over-sized tires.

Linked to the FAQ's page is a thread that covers the differant sized rotors for the various years. I have the GEN1 V6 brakes on my turbo Raider. They work great.

One advantage of the GEN 2 calipers is that used or rebuilds might be easier to find or in better shape.

Also the double piston design should be a bit stiffer and offers more piston area. When you upgrade the front, you can get a better match by changing the wheel cylinder on the rears to the GEN1 4 door part.

I also used the 88 and later master cylinder. It has a larger diameter than the 87. While that increases effort it does help pedal feel. When paired with the V6 booster, you get better feel and less effort. It was one of the best upgrades I have made.

As others mentioned, make sure you match any swapped calipers to the rotors that are the same width the calipers were designed to operate with. A miss match will cause a failure as the pads wear.

While your in there, a fresh set of brake lines is always a good idea.

For the master CYL Rock Auto is a good source. I got a new one for about $70. New rotors and rebuilt calipers may not be all that expensive.

Thank you for that extensive information! So if I grabbed the V6 parts from another truck, and then Gen II calipers and rotors, that would complete the Gen II upgrade right?

Yes, in answer to your question. if you do what KevinC said, you will be able to stoop on a dime and give back .09 in change. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> if you are running bigger tires, like 35's, you will wonder why you let the parts sit on the shelf while you drove it everywhere hoping you wouldn't rear-end people in quick stopps.....Wait. That's what I did. Bigger tires, definitely want Gen 2 Brake system.
