Body Damage is Cool
I drove my 2.6/5speed on a 750 mile trip going 75mph the whole way. Something is wrong with yours if you can't do 65. My truck could still squeeze out 65 with stock gears and 38s. I would adjust the timing. Check the vacuum advance also.

Maybe you have head winds every time you go to and from work slowing you down. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Way back when my Gen 1 was young, I had similar issues with not being able to maintain speed. The problem in mine turned out to be a bad fusable link at the battery. When the engine was under load electrical power was reduced to the ignition. I have replaced the fusable like in that truck 4 times for the same problem. It is hard to think I am the only one with failing fuse links causing undiagnosed power losses.
On an offshot when the engine is idleing wiggle the 3 link wires coming off the battery to see if the engine falters. The wire fatigues inside the insulation.

Kevin, I had not noticed the different OD ratios for the lockup transmission. I would love to find a closer ratio for the top gears in the SR transmission, that needs a fix more than anything I have driven in the hills lately.

An Auto montero is going to be about 500-600rpms less in overdrive then what a 5 speed is in 5th. An Auto has more drivetrain loss as well. What size tires do you have?

I just did this yesterday by accident and my 88 did the faltering thing. Am going to look at it this weekend. Never thought about it robbing power. Thanks.

Yep. I just came back from a camping trip in my '95 and pushing 35's and a loaded cab up to 6500+' really shows off how hard the 'platform' has to work. There's a lot of gear-hunting and obviously way-mis-matched gear ratios for the application. 5.29's would probably be in my best interest, if obtainable/installable/durable/"affordable".

Depending on the engine mileage, you could be running into things like stretched timing chains, worn guides, etc. that affect the overall engine performance. Even with a blown headgasket and a shortblock that used oil, I had no difficulty maintaining 65 mph with my Raider.
