Getting the Wheeling Fever
I like the idea of a snorkel, but I'm trying to keep my truck as unmolested as possible. The idea of cutting body panels, especially in the rust belt, isn't very appealing to me. I was wondering if anyone has tried to do a cowl mounted snorkel, with say around a 3-4" rise? I don't anticipate getting into water above the hood, so I don't think the height will be an issue.

I feel like I saw someone do this years back, routing the breather up through the cowl vent below the windshield. Anyone know if this has been done/could be done?

You still have to cut into the cowl if you do that and that part's not so easily replaceable.

Based on your concerns I'd consider getting on car-part.com and buying a spare fender that you'll use to cut into and put your original fender into storage.

The only other holes you'll have to drill will be those for the 2 screws that go into the A-Pillar support.

That's a good idea -- I may just do that.

Body Damage is Cool
Going into that much water in a truck is stupid. Especially if you have to drive it home.

Oh? Is that right? You realize you're treading into pompous territory right?

As for your thoughts on it, you probably shouldn't follow us on some of our more 'advanced' trips then.

Depending on the trail we're on we may get to do that plenty and one of the benefits of owning a Mitsubishi is that it's usually pretty water tight for short river/stream crossings unless of course you've modified it in such a way that water could intrude the passenger compartment or you perform a driver error like stop in the middle of a stream or cross it too quickly that you pass your own bow wake.

Driven properly the engine's intake has plenty of 'baffles' that allow it to reduce the chance of ingesting excessive water on short crossings even in streams that are hood deep.

That said, based on my own experience on many, many trips these rig's aren't perfect but I would argue that they are better than many rigs when it comes to this kind of water protection and can and frequently do handle those crossings without issue.

Truthfully, I don't feel a huge need for a snorkel. My last '90 made it across a river with water up to/above the headlights no problem, and conquered a mud pit that was nearly to the top of the hood no issue. Never had an interior leak, either.

I plan on setting out on a real "expedition" at some point, so I'm looking to get the truck ready over the next few years before I hit the road. That said, I may just look at a fender I can hack up and not feel bad about it.

Yes, I agree that they are more water tight than other 4x4s. When you go on trips you go with at least a couple other trucks and you have the knowledge and tools to make a fix.

The average person that buys a snorkel thinks that they can drive underwater now. And wouldn't know what to do if they're truck broke down. I've seen too many people buy a snorkel and find out their truck doesn't swim very well.

I can drive underwater now? Woohoo!

A snorkel is way more useful at keeping the intake out of the dust than it is for water fording, most of the time. But it sure is handy for that 1% of the time too!

I was the one with the cowl intake snorkel, back in about 02 on BetsyII. It wasn't easy or pretty, and I think it ended up being more restrictive...

Btw, the first step in any 4x4 waterproofing program should be to get rid of that pesky ignition system. Stops you dead the first time it gets wet...

Sorry, but I don't believe that bold statement for one minute.
