I've been out of the gen1 game for a long time. I'm trying to get back in. My old Raidero had the 6g72 with a 5 speed. I loved the setup and native "power" of that rig. The one I'm looking at now has the 4g54 with 5 speed. Should I hold out for another 6 cylinder? Will it be easy to bolt in a 6g72 to a factory 4 cylinder truck? Or do people generally turbocharge the 4s? I'm sure this has been discussed a hundred times. Maybe someone can point me to a good thread?
Thanks.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
I don't know about swapping, but hands-down I would opt for the 3.0. I had an '88 and the thing was a bit of a nightmare to get running right with the finnicky carb, and then a cracked head.

I've had two 3.0's, my second I just purchased with almost 160k on it, and it runs like a top. If you have the time and the mechanical inclination, maybe a 2.6 would be good for you, but I can't see it ever being preferable over the 3.0, provided you can find one.

My two cents (no actual redeemable value).

Third times a charm.

Get the v6, it gets better mpg, has more power, it has bigger axles, bigger tranny etc. The frames are also very different so swapping in a v6 would be a big chore.

I've had four 2.6Ls and two 3.0Ls. I prefer the 3.0 by far for the previous mentioned reasons - power, mileage, fuel capacity, suspension and brake upgrades. They are worth waiting for. I believe the 3.0 is more reliable as well.

Never having driven the 2.6L turbo, I can't really comment on those other than one would be unlikely to suit my uses.

I have had both 2.6N/A and the turbo 2.6 and 2 v6's 3.0. I would say what the others have said the 3.0 will be a lot less work. With that said the Turbo 2.6 has more power hands down but to get it running from a good running 2.6 N/A it will run you about 1.5k-2k or so.

With all the 4-cyl SWB trucks, some parts availability is better. The V6 trucks with only two years of production are slightly more limited. However, if I was not already involved with so many 4-cyl Monteros, I'd opt for waiting on a good V6.

The turbo in my Mighty Max is what was missing from my Raider, but I still entertain the Ford small block as a replacement.

I've been very happy with my 3.0 M.T. Only things that break are what "I" broke.
I might add as Russel pointed out there was only 2 years of the SWB V6 in N.A. , but the up side is many many parts from Montero Sports, Gen1 LWB, Gen 2 LS and SR - can be added to 3.0 SWB for upgrades. You can't beat the 3.0's V5MT 1 for toughness, although parts for Mitsu MTs might be hard to get.

Thanks, all. You confirmed my own memory of how things were with the V6.
