Getting the Wheeling Fever
I keep forgetting about this, but my speedometer died the second day I had my latest '90. When I got it, it had a fairly loud tick/whine coming from the cluster. I thought it was a dry cable, and before I could look into it, it stopped working all together. I pulled the cluster and couldn't find any noticeable breaks or damage, cable seemed to move freely. Any suggestions for things I should look at?

The speedo drive gear may have stripped on that end of the cable? Could have broken mid-cable somewhere?

Hm, possibly. I should probably see if the cable still rotates with it disco'd from the housing. Is there a drive gear down on the transaxle somewhere? Everything seems solid up top.

On the t-case, look for the drive section on the cable.

And the other end screw into the speedo itself. I'd undo both and turn one end, while having someone watch the other end. Or, just undo the dash and drive down the street to see it the end it turning.

Funny all the little stuff you are dealing with. The rig must have been generally cared for, but then parked for a lot of time...??? Still, I'd take lesser fixable things for a rde that clean any day.

Body Damage is Cool
I remember when messing with mine I hooked the end up at the Tcase to a drill and had someone watch the other end whil I spun it to see if it turn consistently. Mine worked fine just needed some grease.

Just remembered (I think)... There are little plastc gears in the t-case end. In my 87, the cable had gotten too "sticky" and started to bind. This in turn caused those gears to strip. Had another donor so I pulled some parts from it.

That would make sense. Ugh, WHY did I put off lubing the damn cable?

I don't suppose the gear parts are still available? I've called around and there doesn't seem to be any Gen I's in the wrecking yards around here, sadly.

Guys isn't that gear the ones you replace to adjust your speedo for different tire sizes? If so, I believe there's a part number in the Specialized Part Number Repository thread. See the FAQ post at the top of the forum for the link.
