Ok, so these gears have been burning a hole in my to do list LOL....

They have a sticky residue on them of what I can only assume is gear cutting oil. Not much mind you. Hard to see even but obvious once you touch them.

Should I remove it using brake cleaner now or wait until I install them so theres no chance of even surface corrosion?

TIA <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> you never know FE. For $1400 plus the travel time that would have been one heck of a night at the Bunny Ranch in NV. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

The stuff is a first cousin of cosmoline, the gunk that they put on military weapons during ww2 to prevent corrosion while stored or shipped. My g'uncle the gun collector had 4 03-A4 Springfield sniper rifles still in the original shipping wrap with the cosmoline still on them. It normally took boiling water and gasoline to get it all off, or it would ooze out of crevices forever...

Body Damage is Cool
Up until the early 90's, Honda shipped Acuras and Japanese-made Hondas to the US coated in cosmoline.

Nasty stuff to be sure. You'll never get the stain out of clothes that it gets on.

But, you'll also not have a rust problem with a car coming off an overseas trip from Japan either. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Now days, they basically just shrink wrap the whole car, but most of them are assembled in the States now anyhow.

87 Montero, bought new, by me -
88/89 intercooled Starion Turbo engine-
