No special tools except some flare nut wrenches for the pressurizd line fittings from the tank to the chassis steel lines. I never depressurize the lines, just catch the spray with a rag when I crack the seal, or disconnect the wiring connector at the tank and run the motor til it dies.

If I remember right, the flare nut sizes are 14mm and 19mm, and only one end has a swivel fitting. You may be able to pull the pump assembly without removing the pressure line. The fuel return line is a simple hose clamp, I think, no real pressure on that one.

The gasket tends to stick to the tank. Peel it loose slowly so you don't tear it.

A real easy job, except sometimes the flare nuts are a bear to get loose. Aceteone+dexron is a great penetrant.

Thanks guys, i really appreciate the in depth help...it def would be nice to work the pump out just enough to get to that hose w/o disconnecting fuel lines...seems easy enough for the below average guy

You own a Montero. You're already above average.

I wish something could just be straight forward
How on earth are you suppose to unscrew the fuel line from the pump end...i figured once i got the 19mm nut loose it would just unscrew (swivel), but when i try the whole rubber hose twists. What technique am i missing here

Can you undo the line at the other end first? Alternatively maybe you can take the pump out first by dropping the tank?

I don't recall what was involved when taking out my gen II fuel pump in order to replace the tank. Maybe Kirk can recall??

the line at the pump end is one solid piece, right? i just figured the nut on the hose end was a swivel nut. I dont have the equipment to drop the tank nor would i probably know how

May god be with you on your trek. Many a man have come here and failed. I have three units in my shop right now trying to make one good one for fasteddy. That thing is on crazy good. I heated the line end with a torch for 5 minutes and it still would not twist.

It's flexible fuel line until it hits a hard line. Just don't recall how they're joined at the hard line. Maybe crimped on or screwed on.

Dropping the tank is simple enough.
1) Chock the front tires and put the rear of Montero up on jack stands.
2) Disconnect the breather lines from around the top of the tank and the fill tube.
3) Drain the gas via the drain plug at the bottom of the tank to reduce it's total weight and make it easier to handle when you drop it.
4) Support the bottom of tank using a hydraulic floor jack.
5) Disconnect the screws holding the pump from the tank.
6) With a friend helping to keep the tank balanced on the floor jack, unbolt the 2 forward and 2 aft bolts that support the tank & slowly lower it using the hydraulic jack.

At this point the pump should be pretty easy to pull up and out of the tank so that you can turn it instead of that fitting to disconnect the two.

Yeah its a bit harder this way but it's probably better than messing up that nut any further.

Oh and if it's not obvious, you shouldn't be smoking while doing this.

I actually dont have a floor jack, i usually borrow my friends.

Anyways...maybe im not communicating whats going on effectively. The flare nut on the hose end is loose, i just need to figure out how it unscrews off the pump end, when i unscrew it, the hole rubber hose twists.

Maybe someone can chime in on this but the flare nut should spin without the hose spinning also. If they're stuck together maybe try a penetrating oil to get them to dislodge from each other. Otherwise, you'll simply have to spin the pump off the nut some the hose will eventually bind up if you try to keep spinning it.

yeah thats what i assumed, if i can get someone whose done this to confirm thats how the flare nut does work...ill just keep workin on it...but if thats not how it works i dont want to keep trying to twist stuff.

Unwisely i did try just twisting everthing together, i mustve turned the rubber hose end 5X and that still wasnt enough to get it free off the pump end
