I have a 1987 dodge raider with a 2.6 manual. Everytime I try to go up an incline it heitates worst and worst, ill end up crawling up a hill in second. I also get a crazy ticking noise coming from the tranny or transfer case area. It only does it on long up hill stretches, never flat or down hill, and usually not on short up hills. Its got a rebuilt carb, new spark plugs, wires are pretty new, newer o2 sensor, cat and no vaccume leaks. Curious if this issue could have something to do with vaccum advance on dist. Let me know really want to be able too drive thing everywhere. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" /> [color:"white"] [/color]

Timing and fuel filter are fine. How do you check coil?

Timing and fuel filter are fine. How do you check coil? Replace it with a new one. They're around 15 bucks. You can test the resistance across the primary, and secondary windings also, but I do not remember the range, and it's always eaiser for me to just put another coil in there to see. Under heavy load they can break down, and not put out enough spark.

No power and ticking noise underneath? Bang on catalytic convertor with rubber mallet. Does it sound like something loose in there?
Over the hill but still climbing. 88 Montero 2.6L auto, manual hubs, cooling fan conversion gps, recurved distributor,LSD Diff.

Its a brand new cat could that be an issue? As for the compression it is fine. Rebuilt her 3000 miles ago, never been able to go up hill. Changed coil and still having issue.

Check the simple stuff first. Fuel filter... Ignition coil... Ignition timing... Here's a simple thing, easily overlooked. That set of wires off the battery that powers the dash/ignition/all that. Mine had broken down to where there were a couple strands of the wires left powering the vehicle. Someone on here mentioned it. I checked mine, found them bad, replaced, and does great now. Guess it wasn't getting full 12volts .

Not since it was rebuilt... you sure the cam timing it set right? You can look just pull the valve cover and turn the crank tell you get it to TDC. look at the dowel pin and see if it is right at Noon if it is very low then turn the crank one more time around. as see where it is. If you not sure take a pit of it as close to sight on as you can.
1997 Montero LS with a motor swap a 1990 V6 12valve ported heads full 2.5in Ex I run stock tire size for Daily use, off road have 33x12.5 working on going trubo.
