So I'm looking at putting in the Old Man Emu rear leaf kit for my 87 SWB and I see that new torsion bars are an option. With the OME leafs I plan on lifting the front with the torsion bars to equalize. I read the string on torsion bars (a very long one) and came away with the understanding that torsion bars are a straight spring. Springs wear out. What is the forums opinion on replacing the torsion bars?

I'd be all over it except for the $300+ price. It makes total sense that they will have lost tension and new ones will hold up better. BTW, I have the OME 2" rear springs, love them!

Good to know they are loved. I just looked up stock replacements, and they run $270 for a pair without shipping (I only looked at one site). The OME are $225 for the pair, sans shipping. I wonder what the difference in performance is? Do the torsion bar ever break? I would imagine the mounting hardware would ware out before the bar itself, but I'm not an expert.

Springs can take a set over time, but the spring rate will be the same.
With a torsion bar, if you can adjust it to the ride height you want it will have the same spring rate as when it was new.

Found this old thread, What is a good replacement rear spring other than oem? I want to get a few inches in height as well. Anyone have the stock leaf dimensions?

Sweet! I was just looking for these earlier to add to my wish list. Any idea about where to get new bars? What suggestions for shocks?

Did a Google search for the leaf spring part number and it came up with a bunch of Russian (or something) websites...
