Have any of you had any experience with these guns? J&G Sales has them for $220 a piece, and it looks like I can find the ammo pretty reasonably. I was thinking about picking up a couple of them just for target shooting mostly. It looks like I could carry it if I wanted, but maybe it's bigger than it looks. I welcome any feedback you guys have. My wife is planning to take the CC training next month, and I also thought I'd let her have one of these to use.

Thanks,

Keith

Kidding. Theyre OK pistols. Kinda clunky, but good for shooters. I would personally not carry one for ccw, but they could be used for that.

Seriously.. Just get a g19, and be done with your pistol searching. I wish I had.

You seen any 19s in that price range?

Thanks for the input though...I'm still considering it. I need to see how much a local dealer will charge to ship it. Might make me change my mind.

I bought one from J and G about a month ago. It is one of the best pistols ever made, IMHO. That being said:

The finish is a baked on paint-type deal. The newest batch J and G just got in promises to be very good (that's why they upped the price from the $209 I paid). Mine looks pretty good.

It's heavy. It's all steel. If for some reason the gun were to fail, you could beat someone with it very effectively.

Don't buy one with a new barrel. The original polygonal barrel has about a 'forever' life as there are no lands and grooves. The barrel is formed from a solid stock piece and is twisted when heated. They probably won't wear out in our lifetime.

It's a 12-shot clip. I would NOT plan to carry the piece with a +1 in the barrel, as there is only a safety (not a decocker, as I prefer) that can easily be knocked to "off." This is important because:

I have never felt a weapon with a trigger so smooth. Double action is as good as or better than a revolver. Single action is superb. The pull on both is light, take-up is linear and it is just about perfect.

The sights are like nothing else I own. Bring the gun up and the sight picture takes zero time to acquire.

If you're a lefty (I'm not), you will appreciate the ambidextrous safety and mag release.

I have a type 03 FFL. It cost $30 and took about six weeks for the BATFE to send it to me and it's good for 3 years. I can order "Curio and Relic" guns, of which the CZ-82 is one, to be sent to me through the mail once my license is on file with the retailer (and I have one on file at J and G). This also serves to speed up in-person purchases, at least at this particular store in AZ. I flash my driver's license and away we go. If you're ever considering getting one of these licenses, check out the FAQ on the BATFE site. You can order from out of state and avoid sales tax, but you have to pay shipping. No middle-man. There are other restrictions...it's meant to be a collector's license, not a dealer's license.

The CZ-82 shoots a 9x18 Makarov round. Balistically, it's less than a 9mm, more than a .380. The Russian ammo on the market is good, non-corrosive and cheap, but much of it is Berdan primed, so you can't reload it. Reload a clip when you get home from target shooting with Hornady JHP's for home defense, though, as the Russian JHP's don't expand much, if at all.

What's a Glock? Ha ha ha.

JohnnyB pretty much covered it.

I own a couple of commie 9x18 pistols- a Bulgarian Makarov, and a Polish P64. Both have triggers that are awesome in single action. In DA, the Mak is fine and the P64 is damn near unshootable (something like a 26-28 pound pull IIRC). The round is, ballistically, kind of like a hot .380. Both of my 9x18 pistols have a blowback action as does the CZ-82, and that design generally has a bit more perceived recoil than a locked breach design. The mass of solid steel helps mitigate this, but it also means that these pistols are kind of heavy considering their ballistic performance.

I used to CC my Makarov but have moved on to others. Nowadays it's either a S&W J-frame .38spl, which isn't too ballistically dissimilar from 9x18 but the gun is a lot lighter and easier put in my pocket or waistband than the commie 9x18 guns, or a Glock 36 which would be fairly similar in size & weight to the commie guns but fires a superior round. Of course, the S&W and Glock cost more than a CZ-82. Those 9x18 pistols are fun shooters at the range and they are serviceable carry pieces.

I need to renew my C&R so I can get me a CZ-52. 7.62x25 @ 1600 fps isn't a pistol, it's a hand-rifle.

I also have a Polish P-64. I haven't tried to lighten the DA trigger any (who uses that?), but I did put in a stronger slide spring to lessen the felt recoil.

I also have a FEG-PA63, which also shoots the 9x18. That's a carry favorite because it has an alloy frame and is considerably lighter. Seven shot single stack mag in that one.

Interesting comments.

I am still partial to my Ruger P-89 9mm. It fits my hand better than a Glock 19 I tried.
