Getting the Wheeling Fever

I'll be replacing my cracked timing cover this weekend (87 22R 4wd) and I have a couple of questions regarding the process.

1. Do I have to drop the oil pan?
2. If I do have to, can I remove the motor mounts and lift the engine high enough to get the pan off without dropping the front diff?
3 Any tips from those who have done this before?
