Is that the infamous "tape rewinding" noise people used to complain about? (It's getting so people probably don't even remember what a cassette tape rewinding sounds like.)

Having said that, even if it is I don't recall ever hearing a solid cause and fix.

You might want to check your shifter boot, make sure the rubber is intact. It is pretty common for them to get brittle and crack after a while, definitely would make any noise underneath come through louder.
