I still like this set up

Thats the OE swing out gas carrier. It mounts directly to the mitsu body and works VERY nicely.

Alternatively you can also build a Jerry can rack in front of the stock plate holder. Don't forget to relocate the plate to where it can still be seen.

That is interesting! Where would I find one of those OE gas can carriers?

Asia Pacific, Middle East, maybe Europe. Was never sold by Mitsu in the US and I don't believe anyone ever imported them for sale here either.

You may luck out and find one for sale on Ebay (I know some have) but I haven't yet.

Can anyone post the picture of the jack/gas rack on here?

I'm in Thailand at the moment and they will not let the web page open for this location.

I'm also looking for a way to carry extra fuel and would like to see what this is.

"...I'd have to get a lot more than another 5 gal capacity to make it worth swapping tanks."

The main reason I put the YJ tank into the Montero was that the stock tank was smashed in so bad that it only held about 12 useable gallons. The factory replacement tank was very expensive, and would soon be as badly smashed as the old one. That and I had the 20 gallon YJ tank already. Installing the larger tank meant one less can inside the truck, He carries a water can inside where he used to carry the extra gas can.

Further info on the YJ tank installation:
A '96 ZJ fuel sender fits onto the YJ sending unit module, along with a small resistor to match the ohms, and the Montero gauge works perfectly. Later, If we end up swapping in a turbo or EFI motor, the YJ pump module will supply the pressure needed. For the fuel filler hoses, I used some clear Vinyl tubing with some PCV pipe adapters. So far they have held up for over ten years, and they pass the CA EVAP leak tests done during CA smog checks.

PCV hose and PCV pipe fitting adapter and the tank filler vent hose connections (Yes the stock hose is about to go, but it still passes the CA EVAP leak tests!)

The reinforced Vinyl filler hose connections to the YJ tank, stock Montero splash shield is still in place:

Sending unit connection, inside the wiring sleeve is a resistor to match the ZJ sender unit to the ohms of the stock sender unit, the gauge reads very accurately!

If I had to make the skid plate all over again, I would probably make a completely new tank, eliminating some of the corners and the angle that the YJ tank had and get about 25 useable gallons inside the tank. A 28 gallon "Aero" replacement tank for the YJ may fit about as well as the tank setup I made up, or a completely new tank could be made if you had the fab skills.

Can you see this image Pete? It's a clearer picture of one. I know they were available for both the gen I and II but not sure about later versions although I suspect they were also...

Thanks Ray - that came through perfectly ! I think the spare tire one might hold some advantages.....somewhere in a search I found that same unit someone had adapted with two cans on it....looked nice....not sure about the weight. I sent the thread on to someone on here but have lost track of it.

The OE mitsu one is pretty nice and cool for anyone who's an engineer type. It swings out to the left then you swing the door open and it also looks pretty light since it's mostly bent and bolted together tube steel.

That said, since I couldn't find one, I went with what I could find that was inexpensive, holds two jerry cans and I could mount it underneath my platform bed in back so the bed is still usable once I take the cans out of the holder.

But that's not what is being sought after here so I'll leave it at that.

Thanks Ray

Not being one who likes to drill holes in body panels there's a couple of reasons I like the spare tire mount.

1- If desired the entire mount can easily be taken off for in town driving leaving temptation alone for theft or vandalism given what you guys pay for fuel now a days in the US.

2- The spare tire mount on the rear door is engineered to take weight and the movement of the spare tire already. We have seen many of these with giant spares and doing just fine so the fuel cans should be OK. Also the weight of the spare is on the hinge side - this is much stronger than the latch side offering more stability and ease of door opening with less strain on the door. No 50# bouncing up and down on the latch assembly.

3- When mounted on the spare the rear view vision is not obstructed. Also seems it would be noisy and rattling if the fuel can were to be not carried during in town driving.
