Pete,
One thing to keep in mind is that is an OEM Mitsu Jerry can holder not an aftermarket one. That said, I'm sure Mitsubishi engineered the body panels where it mounts to be strong enough to hold the extra 40lbs of weight of a full jerry can.
All your other points are valid ones assuming the weight of your spare and 5 gallons stuck on the outside of it (essentially a cantilevered weight) are not beyond the design specs of the spare tire mount and door/door hinge. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

that is to cool ... a 5 gallon metal can of gas is only 40lbs when it is full .... but a cubic foot of water is 37lbs without the can ????
it dosent have to be surrounded by water to be an island

There are 7.49gal in a cubic foot, at about 8.2lb/gal for water. 5gal is about 2/3cuft. Gasoline is just over 6lb/gal, roughly .75 the weight of the same vol of water. Heck, even heavy bunker oil floats on water.
A full 5gal jerrycan is thus about 30 pounds plus can weight.
Not responsible for advice not taken...

So mounting two of them on a home-made set-up on the door isn't even going to be an issue of weight for the door without a spare? Handy. Running 35's and not carrying a spare since I have a ladder on the door, I am not going to have any issues of weight that way. Sweet!
