Just a WAG but if it's magnetic, maybe it's the magnet that normally sits in your oil pan?

i almost sure it came from my timing cover. iam thinking i put the wrong length bolt in one of my water pump holes. i looked at one of the other covers i have and it looks like its a dead ringer for it. makes me feel better i thought a rod bearing went.

Not all the short bolts are the same length and not all waterpumps have the proper thickness tabs so I expect you have popped the back off one bolt well.
The part is out so you should be in good shape.

If my mind were to wander to a question it would be, Is that the only one that broke through?
Basically you got a part out that could create havoc if it were to get into a timing chain. Apparently it did not and with luck it was the only one in there.
If the engine develops an oil leak up front from one of the bolts you will know which it was.
Should this leak be bothersome, pull the bolt clean things up and apply a sealant, locktight blue would be plenty good to seal the threads and any cracks in the housing.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Just started my rebuilt 2.6 for the first time today and i got coolant in the oil. Pretty sure because of this same issue because i had trouble getting the proper bolt in the water pump.

Anyways, think id be okay if i just put some good quality sealant in the bolt holes? Pretty much gotta strip the whole engine apart to get the timing cover off...

well you could pull vavle cover and remove the water pump and shine a flashlite in the bolt holes to see if you can see light. might beable to pinpoint where and if it is the case.
on side did you have the block deck resrfaced. and a good head that had been resurfaced.
