Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
Finally got a chance and did below steps:
1. Jack up both rear wheels and put it in park and rotate one wheel. Report what the other wheel does.
Result: A bit of play different direction rotation (1/20 of a circle or so)
2. repeat above in neutral and report results.
Result: Both wheels rotate same direction.
3. Jack up all 4 wheels and put it in neutral and tcase in 2wd and rotate a rear wheel, and report if one front wheel turns
Result: Only rear wheels rotate, same direction.
4. shift to 4hi and repeat 3 and report back.
Result: All wheels rotate, same direction. I even tried it with rotating one of the front ones but has less effect on rear wheels, compared to the effect of rotating rear wheels on the front.
E Brake was off during all above tests.

[color:"red"]So it won't really rotate, just wiggle a little, and when you wiggle one wheel forward, the other wiggles backwards, right?
2. repeat above in neutral and report results.
Result: Both wheels rotate same direction.
[color:"red"] And the driveshaft rotates, too?
3. Jack up all 4 wheels and put it in neutral and tcase in 2wd and rotate a rear wheel, and report if one front wheel turns
Result: Only rear wheels rotate, same direction.
[color:"red"] This confirms 2 above, and that center diff is not locked up
4. shift to 4hi and repeat 3 and report back.

[color:"red"] Center diff will dilute effect of front wheels on rear wheels - If you had been in 4hlc it would have been equal.
[color:"blue"]I now concur that rear diff is not a differential any more - it's locked up, whether by action of the locker or mechanical failure, and you neeed to remove it to find out which. Download the factory service manual from the site listed in the faq's at the top of the forum and read up and come back with any questions, and we'll help you through with the removal. It's not all that hard.

Monster: Thank you so much Fasteddy. they only thing I can not figure out is how to pull the axle shafts 3" out (as the manual states), I know I will have to remove the brake caliper and rotor to get there, but what do it do after that? any bolts that is holding the drive shafts that needs to be replaced?

Def not 100% sure so someone else correct me if needed, but I believe there are circlips inside the diff that you'll need to remove, then the axle will slide out.

No.
The diff does not have a removable plate to get at an internal circlip.
I repeat, download the 92-95 or 96 factory shop manual, go to chapter 27 of volume 1, and remove 1-8 on page 27-18 (of the 92-95 manual). Those 8 parts are:
1. brake line 2. brake caliper 3. brake disk 4. ebrake cable attaching bolt 5. ebrake cable end 6. ebrake assembly 7. abs speed sensor 8. axle shaft assembly (4 bolts on end of axle tube - only pull it out 3" to avoid cutting seal with axle splines - you can take it all the way out if you are careful.
The axle will come out with the brake backing plate, bearing, bearing retainer all in one piece. If it were me, I'd pull it all the way out to avoid distorting the seal, but that's just me...
Repeat for the other axle.
Then unbolt all but the top bolt, which you loosen about halfway. Then you smack the nose of the diff chunk with a bfh or piece of 4x4 to break the gasket seal (did you drain the diff first? If not, you just made a big mess on the driveway. If you did drain it, you only made a little mess.)
Refer to page 27-27 of the 92-95 fsm for a concise description of removing both the axle shafts and the diff carrier, and how to put it back in.
Quit being gunshy and take that thing out. Nothing to measure or set up, just bleeding the brakes and adjusting the ebrake when you are done.

OK God deal. we're on the right track now. In park, wheels will not rotate at all. good luck pulling it apart. Im curious what is wrong in there.

I suspect a broken side gear jamming up the diff action, or a broken part in the locker stuff.
