>>>*Some days things work out OK. We had a Cow try to drop a calf, it was hung up, turned, one hoof out. It became clear after several hours that she needed some help.

So Le' and I went out and walked the Cow into our corral. I got a rope around her neck, Le' talked to her in a soft tone of voice until she calmed down, she damn near tore our gate off the post before that.

Then she happened to back up close to the gate so Le' reached in and grabbed the hooves, got the calf partway but no luck, it was really hung up with she did get both front feet started and managed to get it's head turned some.

I walked around as the Cow just stood there, now knowing we were trying to help. I managed to get both arms inside up to my elbows, found the Calf's head and turned it's nose, then pressed it's head down. We got a rope around the calf's front hooves, tied the other end to a fence post.

Then as the Cow strained I gave her a push and she went into a major contraction, with my hands behind the head, out half of it came. Then another tug and it was born!

We saved the Cow and the Calf, about $2400 there.

Da*n, did that feel good!

The Cow now knows, and does not even show the slightest sign of being concerned with us around. I am sure they understand when we are trying to help them....*EB

Both look to have some nice weight. Mama is very handsome.

So how long did it take to get your circulation back? It's nice when they don't kick, considering the circumstances. I've been almost up to my armpit once. Thought my arm was gonna fall off.

We've had similar experiences with our Pygmy goats, and my daughter is very adept at helping out the mommy goats.

My son decided that he'd like to join the local 4H beef project last year. The leader gave him a heifer about 1 week old that the mom-cow wasn't feeding. Mary (short for marinade) is blind, but follows our Jersey steer around the yard, calling and lowing for Angus' location.

Good show, EB! Congrats to you, the wife and the mommy!

>>>*Yes, this is a nice little herd, just 7 heifers and the big bull. The Bull is purebred Angus and a big rangy fellow, the Cows are mixed so that usually makes for big calves.

I never would have managed to pull the thing, it was just too big for her.

When my old arms died on me, that rope and fence post sure did help.

I did this once before when I was a kid, usually I just watched Mom and Dad deliver them when they got into trouble.

That makes two new calves so far and from the signs, another one tomorrow sometime.

It really is a wonderful experience, bringing a life into the world, especially when it's so bad like this that we think we lost the Calf. Both would have died except for us.

So far just two calves, lots of puppies and kitties, too many Sheep to count and I have one live human delivery to my credit. I should hire myself out, huh?... ...*EB

Indeed you should.

I'll wager there are plenty of folks trying to do what you do with your experience.

Nice job, man.

>>>*Young cows, big Bull. Had to pull another one!

Way to big to ever make it on her own, she stood there and let us just like the last one.

5 calves so far, this one has a white face, all the rest are jet black....*EB

My Gramps had a big bull like that many moons ago. Seemed he liked this one heifer in particular. After prolapsing her uterus about the 3rd time, he got pastured over at my uncle's place.

That ain't no fun to work with either.
