The windshield on my 89 looks terrible, like it has been sandblasted as it has millions of surface pits. It's a pain to see through at specific angles.
Anybody replaced their windshield on the Gen. I??
Is it worth finding one at the salvage yard and have a glass shop put it in?? Any problems with leaks or wind noise??

Had the windshield replaced on both mine, the 89 was cracked when I bought it so had mobile guy replace it..someone hit my 91 with some sort of object in a parking lot so had to get that replaced too...Set me back about 250 bucks. I was too chicken to do myself so had glass guy do both. a new seal is included in the price, no problems with either one with noise or leaks.

Replaced the glass on my old 90 and my 96 montero's.
The 90 was done by Safelite. Excellent service. Used PPG glass.
The 96 was done by a place next to the Pick N Pull in San Jose when I first bought it a few years back. Unsure about the brand of glass but it has proved to be a job well done as I still have that windshield currently.

Anybody replaced their windshield on the Gen. I?? Is it worth finding one at the salvage yard and have a glass shop put it in?? I did recently on my GenII after a rock cracked it. Actually I have replaced the windshield about 3 times for rock damage. The angle and glass don't seem to stand up well. I would not recommend junk yard glass. Even a minor chip along the edge can cause the glass to crack on installation. A local shop did mine for $300 for new glass (insurance covered $50). Safelite quoted $167 and I knew a good quality job could not be done for that. I have always had issues with creeking noise caused by cold weather and the windshield glass. None of the replacements solved the problem, just seems to be a design issue.

I'm on my fourth one in 21+ years. Cracked windshields just seem to be a hazard of having such a flat-fronted vehicle. I've always paid a glass company for a new one; the windshield just seems too important to take any risks with. I think I paid around $300 for a new one last summer. Prior to that, I had comprehensive insurance, so I think the deduct was around $100.
Oh yeah, I got a crack in the new one on the highway after about a week

Why don't you guys add no-deductible glass replacement to your comprehensive insurance? It's really, really cheap.

I've replaced mine a few times and need to do it again. First time I paid a shop to do it. (About 180.00 out here). Second time I decided to use JY glass. After pulling the glass out of 3 Monty/Raiders I finally got it done. First one broke on me coming out, second one broke on the way home, third one I got it in and almost completely installed and made one wrong move (got inpatient). It put a nice crack right in the center. The next one I will just go with a shop again and not worry about it.

Do you think the average stormtrooper knows how to install a toilet main? All they know is killing and white uniforms.

Long story short, I had mine replaced about 3 mo. ago in my 87 and I wished I would have removed it myself and then prepped it myself because there was a ton of rust. I noticed it as the professional glass installers were putting it in but it was pretty much to late to stop them, but it lurks in the back of my mind, and Im not keeping it??? Good luck. METALMOVER
