I've had a wierd metallic rattle from under my 95 LS right at 2,000 rpm,....for quite a while. I had a friend hold the rpms at 2000 while I was under the truck. The rattling sound is coming from this small metal cylinder on a bracket, that hangs under the front driveshaft U - Joint. I'm guessing that it is supposed to reduce vibrations from the front u joint.

Has anyone had this problem,.....any suggestions on how to stop the rattle? Thinking maybe I can just take it off.
Any thoughts?

I've had a couple of Monteros with that annoying metallic rattle. Both times it wasn't the bracket you are referring to, it was the stone guard that was around the front of the rear driveshaft. I just undid the driveshaft by removing the four bolts at the rear u-joint, unplugged the front from the transfer case (gear lube will come out), removed the part and plugged the shaft back in and bolted up the rear again.

Rattle gone.

I'd double check yours. Give it a wiggle. I've never missed having mine there.
