So next is, how do I get the black "4runner" trim off without breaking the tabs behind it? A prayer and a wish, basically. I had to buy all new clips to hold it on.... some of the tabs broke but it's alright...

After I got the vent panel off I couldn't tell how it would be possible to take it off without breaking most the tabs.
I'm about to put mine back one and was trying to find an alternative to the whole side vent. I was thinking of remolding it out of smooth fiberglass or something the, "4runner" gold text is fading and looks kind of shabby.

Hey Greg haven't chated with you in a good while. Thanks I agree. Found some nice looking ones at a salvage yard, broke some tabs getting them. I ask because the guy that painted my truck didn't listen when I told him not to paint mine. So now they same color as truck. I'm so diapoited not sure I like that look. Might as well get the new clips and maybe some appoxy too from the sounds of it.

ok .. heres the "trick " for the sail panel (black trim piece) 1st , push the bottom forward to unlock the lower clip 2nd , push up to release the 2 top clips 3rd , pull down to release the middle clips , and remove . the clips are vertually usless at this point now , becuse you can not re install the panel in reverse , and you can not remove the clips successfully , well at least I have never been successfull . I usually just "punch out" the old clips and replace with new toyotafiberglass clips

Been a bit eh, guess we are all busy I agree, i took mine off before i got my truck painted, didn't give them the opportunity... Corey's way looks the best, i think i tried something like that, only broke 1 or 2 tabs. Clips were all junk. Epoxy + new clips sounds like the ticket...

Is there suppose to be a foam air cleaner behind the panel? When I got mine off there was a shriveled up piece of black mass, that might have been a larger piece of foam at one time.

Read my page (above). It used to be a series of rubber flaps that cover the vent openings. I suppose that is to keep water from getting in but allowing air to exit.
