What gears do you have now? If you have 4.27 gears you might want to go to 4.63's, if you have 4.63's i wouldn't worry about it with only 33's.

97 = 3.5 SOHC = 4.27. Follow up question is does it have a locker? Prolly not as it's an LS. In which case, find a DOHC SR full rear axle and grab what you want from the front.

so...... if i find a sr ill be safe taking it from a donor????? just rebuild the insides? what about the front differential?
so my ingnorance is this.....
i want to run 33's i have a total of roughly 4" of lift. i want to retain my MPG and better offroading basicaly the upward & downward crawl.. it is going to be a camping backcountry expedition vehicle along as my DD till i get "newer Style" montero for the DD.
i have contacted a local shop that specializes in regearing the "WEEPS" and domestic 4x4 and they cant help me. so im stuck
if i do the rear i have to do the front correct?????
please advise and excuse my ignorance

so...... if i find a sr ill be safe taking it from a donor????? just rebuild the insides? what about the front differential? Yes. No, for the rear, you'll want the entire setup from hub to hub and possibly the driveshaft (needs confirmation), plus the mitsu air compressor in the rear (or an aftermarket air source with a low pressure regulator). The rear locker only needs a few pounds of pressure to engage the locker. The front will require the SR's ring and pinion gears. i want to run 33's i have a total of roughly 4" of lift. Its a Montero and not a jeep so you'll only need a 1-2" body lift for 33's. i want to retain my MPG and better offroading basicaly the upward & downward crawl.. it is going to be a camping backcountry expedition vehicle along as my DD till i get "newer Style" montero for the DD. Are you looking at doing overlanding (back country exploring) or harder core off roading rock crawling or high clearance 4x4 trails? If mostly overlanding, then I recommend 31's or 32's. You'll get far better mileage and (albeit not a big issue) reduced wear on your engine/drivetrain. i have contacted a local shop that specializes in regearing the "WEEPS" and domestic 4x4 and they cant help me. so im stuck Yeah we know how 99% of 4x4 shops are clueless about mitsu 4x4s. Mirrors the US 4x4 market. Primarily because of Mitsu's Motors N. America's highly effective marketing team... HTH

Don't have ASA loaded up anywhere right now to check part numbers. But, your 97 LS should have the same CVs up front as a 95-96 SR. Assuming so, and depending on your local pick-n-pull (availability, prices, etc.),the general route I would take is:
1. Complete rear axle. 2. Front diff housing (with the gears inside of course). 3. Rear locker "accessories": compressor (in the cubby under the rear pass feet), R/D Lock switch (bottom of the center dash column), control module (behind DS cargo panel, note there are two boxes back there, be sure to get the right one). 4. Drive shafts: pretty sure yours will work, but you'll want to confirm. Again, a parts search in ASA will tell you if the PNs match.
In short, if you can get all the axle units ready to use, you don't need anything from a shop. No R&P set up is needed. It's all bolt-in work.
One other thing to consider though, based on your fab work thread and all that seems to be going into this rig, is that if you have a front diff out of the truck starign at you, I'd give serious consideration to the ARB front locker...
