I've had my '89 raider for about 6 years and except for maybe the first week (when I was getting used to it) I haven't used first gear on the road. Is this unusual or or not?

I learned to drive on a old Ford pickup and we never used first gear, you must have low gears, if it hasnt hurt it in 6 years Im guessing its not going to. I can tell you in my 4 cyl. Raider I do have to use 1st gear.METALMOVER

I always used 1st in my 87 SWB while it was NA. Pretty much needed to. Now that it's turbo, I don't really have to, but still do. Son #2 (who drives it now) does too, but recently started it in third mistakenly. That's was ugly, but he didn't choke it down...

You must still have 235s on yours.
I always use 1st. I only have to roll a couple feet before 2nd, but why put a strain on anything. Yep there is a little bog and slip when I do start in 2nd,,,but I'm not in that big a hurry anymore, so I use 1st.

I was taught that lugging the engine is the worst thing you can do to it. It never would have occurred to me to start off in second. I always start in first and run it up to an appropriate RPM. I have started in second by mistake - when coming to a stop in second and forgetting to shift back to first. Don't like it.

This, of course, does not apply in Low Range.
