I've been searching for a pre95 donor vehicle for a 4.3 swap for my $100 Montero project. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a good low mileage donor at a good price that is close enough and I don't particularly want a used engine that I can't see running. I started to explore just rebuilding my existing 3.0. Anyway, I was looking on eBay, and a seller had some brand new 6g72 3.0 long blocks for Hyundai Sonata's on there... for $700.00! That should be cheaper than a rebuild!

After considering it, and researching the plausibility of using it, I ordered one and there is still one left if anyone else is in the market for a new engine. I'll be keeping it relatively simple and sticking with the 12V SOHC 3.0 for now on this project.

I'll document the progress and differences between the Monty and Hyundai versions as I swap things over to the long block.

This is from eBay. It's listed as for 89-95 3.0 Sonatas and should be the same heads, cam, and bottom end as the SOHC 12V 3.0 in my 89 Montero. I'll need to swap out the oil pump, oil pan, and all accessories, and possibly drill and tap some bosses. Hopefully all goes smoothly.

I'm out of town for a week, but want to start ordering parts that I will need so I can hit the ground running when I get back. There are some parts that I will need to swap over that I'm not sure about the need to replace and would appreciate some advice on. The project vehicle has 200K miles:

1. Distributor. Should I bite the bullet and buy a new one, or would re-using the old one be OK?

2. Oil Pump. I figure that this is a good time to install a new one rather than reuse, but apparently the OEM ones are no longer available. Does anyone have a recommendation as to a good replacement brand. Prices are all over the map on these. Is this something that can be rebuilt?

Thanks.

As long as you did not have any major ignition issues i would reuse the distributor, just replace the cap/rotor.

Sorry can't say on the Oil pump, never replaced one on these motors.

I have to say, I wish i would have bought one of these instead of the used heads I just bought.

actually 92-97 Sonata should fit.
Minentow(sp) in Wy put one in his M.M.
The 3.0 and 3.5 rear wheel engines were sold off to Hyundai and Kia when Mitsu went to 24v SOHCs. It should be a drop in,,,althoug I heard in one case a moter mount hole had to have threads tapped into it.
Intake must be Montero...
Your water pump needs to be Montero...
You need your Montero oil pickup tube...
I always thought that the Sonata oil pump "might" work cause the filter has the same mount location. But I sure wouldn't skimp on anything on that new engine. (man what a find ).
Make sure the threaded holes are in the bearing cradle for your oil pickup tube to bolt to. (my rebuilt shortblock had no holes and I had to dril them.)
--You Must use your "89 distibutor. The internals and the wireing harness are specificly "Only "89".--(the internal optical module for the '89 only , is available(( 'strangely',not avail. 90-94)) and was on sale at rockauto) The bodies on the distrib probably never wear out( unless you trash an engine with sand and water/antifreeze internally), Theres not much torq on that short distributor shaft.
edit:
I picked up an oil pump from Rockauto awhile back ( sitting in my parts closet for the Sonata engine I'll buy someday)
it was on closeout for $65. It's a B/A with dust on the box from sitting in a wharehouse, i.e. non chinese,, , cast in Korea, maybe they still have one.

Interesting information...

I've been looking at pictures of the Sonata oil pump side by side with pictures of the Monty oil pump and I can't really see any differences. Until they are side by side though, it's really hard to tell. If they look the same in person, I may just stick with the OEM Sonata pump.

Are the oil pans appreciably different? If they are not, it may make sense to just use the Hyundai oil pan and not even open up the bottom. I'm expecting them to be very different being FWD vs RWD though.

Good information on the Distributor too. Thanks Dave.

The oil pump seems to just be different in the oil filter required. The Sonata uses a timy one.
The important thing on trying to use the Sonata pump is that the oil pickup tube will have to bolt up to the oil pump exactly the same.
I imagine the sonata oil pan is pretty shallow, but mute point because you'll need that deep Montero pan, its baffles , and the dent that makes room for your front diff.
Did you find any hole on the bearing craidle for the tube to bolt to? There may be some, but they my be in a different place than needed . Be prepared to drill and tap those 6mm (as I recall) holes.
On your m.m. bosses, hopefully it was only the very last of these engines, like the 96-97 , that didn't come with the rear wheel drive mount bosses already tapped.
