First time I've had them apart and doing a rebuild on them with the Toyota part #'s from the parts suppository. Anyhoo, on the selector dial there's a hole that aligns with the pointer that has a spring in it. Was there supposed to be a ball or something in there on top of the spring? I took both sides apart and neither had anything but the spring. Just curious. Didn't find a real good diagram in ASA either.

I went to check if it showed anything on the FSM's and as early as the 84 Montero, it only shows an auto hub. IIRC (perhaps Grasscat can chime in here) there was no ball bearing there.
On a side note, I just realized we don't have any FSM's for mitsu pickups which is where all the US domestic manual hubs originate from... at least thats how I understand it.

Sorry, just couldn't resist... Then he needs to get some. I mean, yes, there is supposed to be a bearing/ball at the end to do the clicking when the dial is turned.

What Bill said. The ball engages the indents which will keep them locked or unlocked. You can order them from the same place you got the gaskets and o-rings. Somewhere on this forum I post where to get them and what parts you need. I sure a "Search Function Jedi Master" can find that post. Never mind Larry I found it hub info Checkout the first to reply to that post. Here's where to get them Wabfab

I have an FSM with a break down of manual hubs, and have had three sets from 85 & 86 Monteros. Ray's set came from a pickup.

Right, the older FSMs have details on the manual hubs...

I searched in the archives and found several threads about the Aisins themselves. I've had the Toyota parts for a few years now. I got enough to rebuild them 3 times. I just didn't find the WabFab folks. Thanks for that link. That probably needs to go in the tech reference thread. My springs are fine so I'll head to the gun store and see if the reloader has a ball that'll fit. If I find one, I'll post up the shot size for reference.
It'll be nice to have balls again. I was missing them and didn't even know it...

You saying you have Yota hubs for parts, or Aisins on a Yota? The balls should be the same. At least, when I lost one myself, I snagged a Zuke Aisin and used some of its parts, including the ball.

I've got Mitsu Aisins on my GenI. I got the Toyota part numbers from the suppository for the gaskets and oring. I checked the orifice against some Toyota hubs and they're the same, don't recall the measurement though. Will post up after I get it figured out.
