The St Louis area is seeing 100+ deg temps today so thought this post would be important. My temp gauge only rides up to the 1st line (barely moves) even in yesterdays 97 deg temps with high humidity. Where should a properly maintained V6 run (both on the gauge and if I use my temp gun pointing to the rad and hoses)? Thanks in advance for any response. Morgan

Mine goes 1/4 the way up on both the 4cyl and 6cyl.Have you ever changed your thermostat? Have you looked threw the forums for similar issues? Not good if you have a bad temp sensor or gauge sense it appears overheating is the number one killer on theses units.Im guessing they should run around 210 degrees depending on your thermostat. Good luck and stay cool. METALMOVER

I have searched but the results are kinda vauge. Could be user error but just doing what I do on IH8MUD and 2002FAQ. All vehicles that I have owned within the last 15 years or so always ride at the halfway mark. With the Raider it runs under the 1st mark but in yesterdays heat creeped up to just a little over. I just got my 89 a month or so ago and addressed some other issues. Plan on replacing the thermostat, hoses, belts, and have the rad rodded out.

The "normal" position for an undamaged temperature gauge in a Gen1 in top shape is slightly below the halfway mark - and it should stay there.
Aside from radiator, thermostat, cooling fan clutch and temperature gauge sender issues, it is fairly common for the gauge itself to become damaged as a result of alternator voltage regulator issues.
