I suspect it was originally a manual which he swapped in an automatic since he indicated his replacement transfer case has a neutral detent and he encounters the problem where it goes into neutral.

But as has been asked, we also need to confirm what transmission you have now (see what I mean about putting the details in the signature <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />).
