On my 86 Toyota truck 4x4 2.4 5 speed(use to be a turbo),I've an intermittent hard shifting problem.Had the shifter seat and bushing changed, and put in Redline MT-90 fluid, new master & slave cylinders.Pedal adjusted. All this was two months ago and shifted like butter. Now It's back to intermittent hard shifting into first and second. This can change back and forth on any given day.Clutch bracket seems good though rusty..no flex in firewall.Do these older 4cyl's have the bracket fatigue that the later 6 cylinders do?Could it be the rubber hose by the slave?A friend who has a repair shop wants to put in a longer rod in the slave and said this would fix the problem, but others say it wouldn't help.Any thoughts on this shifting problem? Not mechanical at all so I count on others and I'm too messed up physically to even check the clutch bracket...Thanks for any replies...Finally squeezed my decrepit body under the dash and checked the clutch bracket with a flashlight and see a previous weld around a stud above the cotter pin that is cracked.Have to find someone in the California motherlode area who will take out the bracket/weld it and put it back in or get the OEM replacement part if needed.Anyone know the OEM number or a good close by mechanic in Calaveras county?....thanks.

Kewlynx, this morning it shifted fairly well. Will have to get a younger more able bodied fellow to check up under the dash on the clutch pedal bracket.I know there's a weld around one stud that appears to have a small hairline crack in that weld, maybe it dosen't as my eyes are not what they use to be.I can move the clutch pedal side to side by hand and it creaks while doing this, plus it appears the pedal arm bends a little up to the right while moving it side to side. Will have to wait until that younger fellow has time to check it.Should the clutch pedal have any side to side play?Thank you fellows for your replies.

Does anyone have an idea what year trucks or cars have the same clutch pedal bracket assemblies as my 86 truck? Can't find a reference even on the DIY toyota site.New car dealers haven't replied to my inqueries. So hope to find a good used part. This is the part number for the clutch bracket assembly, fits 86-88 trucks and some earlier models..so if anyone has a good one, please comtact me....http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/xref?s=55106-89122&mU=on link won't work on this site but the number is 55106-89122.

Dave, also give a look at www.car-part.com for the junkers near you. My neighborhood kids have grown up and moved on, so best way to tackle that chore is with yanking the seat. Don't know of a spec for lateral movement for the clutch pedal, but theoretically there shouldn't be.

Yeah kewlynx, have managed to locate 4-5 clutch brackets via other Toyota forums and one at a wrecking yard in Plymouth,Ca.Now to get the part and have someone install it for me.The clutch pedal does move side to side with just a little bit of muscle and it also will travel up to the right and make a creaking noise when pushed that way.One minute the stick will shift smooth as butter then notchy, sometimes not at all.
