Was that (5000lb) a tow rating or a combined weight rating?

My recent trailer purchase was fraught with compromise. I have a Ford Ranger with about double the tow rating of the Montero, but with less power to pull, but the brakes on the Ranger are twice as good as the Montero. Getting a 5000 lb capacity trailer means less load weight, adding brakes also adds weight that has to be deducted from load max. Calculating total safe trailer capacity means the Montero can only handle 750lbs while the Ranger can handle 1600lbs, on a trailer with a 3500lb axle.

I also would never tow 5000 lbs, on either vehicle. If I needed that much capacity I'd rent a larger truck.

Do the 95 brakes have larger pad area?
