Replacing rear wheel seals - Anything I should do, "while I'm at it"?

I was playing around the rear of the Raider this afternoon and notice diff fluid all over right rear wheel. I am torn down to pull wheel but the darn ebrake has got me stumped...what is the trick to removing the axle and/or removing the ebrake cable? Do I have to take the entire ebrake cable with it by disconnecting at the adjustment linkage? Thanks for any fast help Gentlemen!

Let me see if I remember correctly. You know the basics so i willl fast forward to the part where you remove the breaks, you might need to replace the shoes since they might have gotten contaminated with oil. removed the 4 nuts from the outer side of the brake assembly, imagine as if you are looking where the hard brake lines are assembled with the rear brakes drum assembly-> [color:"red"] [] [/color] [color:"red"] ~ [/color] <- hard brake line and pull the axle. I believe that you have to pull the bearings as well (sorry I am not certain of this others can confirm) if that is the case they have to be removed and pressedc back in witha special press therefore your local NAPA or mechanic might do this for a nominal fee.
To put back together is the same reversed procedure.
Like you I got to do the same to my new 1990, so I will as well benefit from the other's feedback. *** Please allow me to stress how important it is to secure the vehicle with the appropiate wheel lock and jack stands before you get under it, be safe.

The backing plate and e-brake cable can stay together as a unit when you pull the halfshaft. Once you have the four bolt holding the backing plate to the axle removed, the halfshaft slides out. I used a makeshift slide hammer to achieve removal. There are two paper gaskets to replace when you do this operation, also, as you will observe upon diasassembly.

No paper gaskets seen when pulled apart? I have half shaft out with E-brake line attached. I am now gonna have to get a gasket puller to pull old gasket out. Another question comes about, do I go ahead and pull the drivers side rear 1/2 shaft too and replace that seal as well or does the old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" come into play? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> Are brakes as hard as they look to replace? I was gonna replace the seal, reassemble and then take it to the local garage for the brake work? Thanks for the quick replies gentlemen, wasn't something I planned to do, but I am glad I discovered it when I did, easy and cheap enough replacement to not ignore!

Another silly question, (I know forum etiquette is to search; but the search on this forum stinks at best.) Do I need to remove the nut and lock washer and pack the rear bearings? Thanks Gents!

Thanks OR, I guess it didn't dawn on my that was for the entire site. The less than adequate I was speaking of was the "Search" link, that if you don't realize it you will only search the past week...then after you realize it and go back, you are not allowed to search too quickly without the time lock issue. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> Thanks for your assistance and I did find what I was looking for.

Yup, you can use Google to search the forum right from the top of the page. Setting the search timetable is part of the search process. We keep it at the shortest period to reduce the 'hit' on the database. The longer the period, the harder the database system has the work. I just remember to change it to the longest period unless I know when.

If you've never done them before, I say take them to the shop or better yet, have a buddy who knows how to do them, show you how. That's what I did since we're talking lives if you muck this up. If you have done drum brakes before, they are pretty much like the ones i've seen done before. HTH.
