I'll search the date.

SO here's a dumber question: Are SRs and Sports different models? Everything I've read says the SR is the axle to use.

I'm fairly new to Planet MItsu and the designations I know are Gens 123, LWB SWB, LS, an RS (which I think means the base model), & SR. I have a vague notion that Sport is the 2 dr model. But I thought 2 dr models were discontinued in the US after Gen 1 and thus it couldn't be a Gen 2 axle. That means that my supposition that Sprt could mean 2 dr is wrong. Anyway either I haven't had my coffee yet this morning or have completely missed the point of the latter half of your post - most likely both.

The "Montero Sport" is a totally different vehicle which is based of the Mighty Max pick up truck frame, while the Montero is a stand alone platform which has trim models of base(none), LS, and SR up to 98 when those designations were dropped.

Right to what Justice said. But, you will also occasionaly see old 2-doors that are called Montero Sport. If it is a 90s-00s Montero Sport, it will be as Justice said and a 4-ddor. An 80s Sport will be a package on an SWB.

Discussions here that say MS will invariably mean the 90s-00s specific vehicle. (aka Challenger in other markets.)

And I learn something new every day. Thanks for clarifying.

Might not matter anyway - my hope that I'd get lucky with the local bone yards was a bust. Does anyone have another source for 96 SR axle? Or maybe have an extra???
Found them online for $500 + shipping. Really want to do this mod, but that's kind of pricey.

Somehow in your searching you found us. That same search engine will find what you need. Type in "pick n pull" and check their inventory. I see a few, but as you haven't told us where you live I have no suggestions.

Same thing for the Montero Sport, due a search, there's tons of pictures and information.

Yeah, right? Shoulda told you that right off!

I'm looking in the SF Bay area since the truck is currently in Richmond. I'm familiar with picknpull since there doesn't seem to be much else around. Been watching their yards for awhile. There is only 1 96 out there and 2 95s within 200 miles still left to check. Otherwise I have to decide if it's worth driving to LA area to look there. Fuel might cost as much as buying one online. Checking again on the 95's and 96 today. Had to work yesterday and asked a friend to check out the 95's. He says they aren;t SR's but since I'll be in the area today unexpectedly I'll check them out just to be sure.

btw - with my work schedule it is difficult to spend a lot of time searching to find succinct answers without filtering through a lot of stuff I don't necessarily need to know. And frankly - without researching everything it is hard to find out which advice is good vs bad. Ex. In the archives I read a thread about swapping brakes. At the end of the thread (dated significantly later) it said that as it turns out using gen 1 rotors are a bad idea and why. Id' rather ask the simple questions that seem to have a lot of answers and I really only want the right one. A friend turned me onto this site and said "if you want answers from the pros - this is where you ask. It will get you to the right place a lot faster without all the hassle." So sorry for not searching everything before asking, but I'd rather get the right answer the first time instead of researching, finding three possible answers, asking the forum anyway, and wasting time. Besides, I've heard good things about this place and figured it would be a good way to get to know the real Montero enthusiasts.

M&S Recycling up in Rancho Cordova might have an SR axle available but yeah for that you really just need to keep checking the for sale forum, this forum, the local pick n pull yards and car-part.com for one.

Bear in mind the alternative to the OEM selectable locker is an ARB which is much more expensive and will be harder to install since you have to install it into the diff instead of simply swapping the rear end.

San Luis Auto Salvage still has a '95 in yard with only 151k on it. You could probably get everything for $300 since it's been sitting there 2 years.
I'm probably wrong but thought U joints were all the same and you only need 95's driveshaft flange to attach to Gen 1 driveshaft at the u joint.
On M.S. axle,,,I though somebody on here had put a M.S. 4.90 hybridlocker axle on one.
I need to reinvestigate this as I need to check on shock mount comparisons. The axle width, spring perches, and trailing arm perches all measure the same. I was going to use an M.S. axle but then Grasscat came to the rescue and gave me Grasscat 1's LS LSD axle

Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately neither has anything usable. SLAW says they have a 92 - but not a 95. Guess they sold it. Good news is that Offraoders post reminded me of the 2 miles of scrap yards in Sac. I see a field trip in the near future. Found something on Ebay but it is the axle only - no pump or line - and shipping is UGLY.

In the event I can't find a 96 and I am have to go with a 94 or early 95 is there one or the other that will require less mods? Ie - is there a lesser of two evils? Think I found a shop to do the driveshaft if it goes that way.

The other option is finding a used one online - pricey, but I'd really like a locked up rear end considering where I am headed. Heck if I could lock up the front end I would!

Working on the front end now. Finished the engine swap last night, and new front fenders. New tranny is in. Stanless cargo rack is swapped too. Little by little - just gotta get that axle!
