Well being in canada I have never actually seen a 3.0 v6 in a truck before let alone examined the throttle body. But from previous mitsubishis I have owned with a galant 4G63 in mind that had a crazy idle problem. It surged between idle and about 1400 to 1500 rpm.

Now this throttle body had I IAC which might actually be the same as a montero a well as what they call a wax pellit high idle. there was two coolant lines that went to the throttle body which would close a auxillary air valve as it was warmed by coolant much like how a thermostat works, and like a thermostat they can fail open giving you high idle all the time!!

Not sure if this applies to the montero but its a idea.

its the same on the montero 3.0 you can adjust the iac to find out if it is the problem

I think the reason you're chasing electronics is because its not consistent. If it were a tooth off or a blown HG then I would think it would be happening all the time. And I've never heard of either condition causing a high idle, nevermind an intermittent high idle.

I would say that it idles high about 97% off the time. If that tells you anything.

Ok, edited away my griping rant of above post,,,but still have the ?question?:
.
can an ICS thats passes both FSM tests still be bad???
.
I just noticed a thead linked near begining on Goldenprospector's thread about "wax pellet" in h20 part of Throttle Body. I'm alittle confused by the thread as I think it says T.B. have wax pellet in them, but seems to say the '89 has a thermo"spring" in it , and maybe not a wax pellet
I can't get the bottom off my T.B. cause the screws are oxidized in place.
??? has anybody else successfully repaired this part of an '89 throttle body???

Dave, as far as I know, all the gen1 v6's had the wax pellet fast idle cold start system, and I don't think it's seviceable.

If the ics has a bad pintle (the thing that seals the hole up) it will pass electrical tests fine, and still not work.

How do you tell if the pindle is bad. Both these ICS look almost new.
Have you checked out that old post linked near the beginning of Goldenprospector's "idle" thread?
I'd link it over onto here but I don't know how to work a computer.
On this 2000 M.S. T.B. I have stashed down in the local yard has a screw that hold the edge of the plug that contains the pellet, so I think those may be servicable. The '89 has a pressed in freezeout looking plug that doesn't look removable.
I was thinking over trying to adapt that T.B. . It's a bigger bore but bolts up and has EGR nipple.
I'm gettin despirate.

I know how you feel Dave, I'm in the same boat.

Hope you get it figured out! Take care.

"reserection", on this tthread anyway.
Feb., almost spring and the end of hibernation for both me and local lizards. Lizardwatching starts in March around these parts.
This week I installed a brand new water temp sensor , a new 195o thermostat and upper radiator hose...no change in idle - still hanging around 1600-1800.
I'm tired of screwing around with the simplest solution and so I just ordered a ICS from Rockauto.
I'm betting thats what it is and that the guts are worn out in the 2 ICS I have, even though they make clicking noise before startup and both check out OK in the ohms dept.
